1987 iroc engine question(l98 issue)

HI all,

just bought a 87 iroc tpi 350 car and got it home to discover it has "wrong" heads. I was told its the orginal engine with 93k and i was always under the knowledge that at start of 1987 they started both the L98 and centerbolt heads in the f-body line.

The problem im facing is my car has grey perimeter valve covers. The cars been sitting for last 12 years in a garage and motor is probaly junk but time for vortec engine or rebuild the "original" engine.

Ok heres pix of the ugly turd.....but it was a 600 dollar turd

Re: 1987 iroc engine question(l98 issue)

87 L98 in that car would have come with centerbolt heads, casting # 083.

Those aren't original.

As far as whether better or worse, that would depend on what casting they are.

Re: 1987 iroc engine question(l98 issue)

Yeah that hood is one of the absolute most tasteless POSs ever invented for these cars... but hey, it's only 4 little bolts.

The Vette version of the L98 would have come with aluminum perimeter bolt heads, casting # 113; so if that's what they are, you're like the 1st person in all of hot-rodding history that actually bought something supposedly "from a Vette", and it ACTUALLY IS. That's like quantum-mechanically rare. But who knows, get the casting # before getting either excited or disappointed about it, and proceed directly toward reality without any fantasy-land detours along the way.

Oh ok I thought the aluminum 113 heads started in 87, hence my assumptions of being older vette engine. Im going out digging to see what motor rly is tonight.

I've got bad feeling this is a 305 now due to iron heads. And yes has l98 too code and vin 8

Welp....my assumptions were dead right.

Block reads GM5.0LG on drivers side of block

It has fuel pump block off plate so I assets its an older gen "0" 305 ugh. Time to hunt for a true l98

Sorry to hear that... all too common...

"Yep, out of a Vette.... gotta be a 350, runs too good to be a 305"
