Rear hatch pull down

Hi everyone! I'm a new owner of a third gen 87 Iroc-Z 5.7. I was told it has every option. I just purchased it on eBay. It has low miles, white with red interior, super clean. My only problem with the purchase is that the rear hatch pull down doesn't work. After stalking this message board for the last two weeks, I found Lon at Top Down Solutions and am confident he will remedy the problem.
This leaves me with the issue of feedback on eBay. I contacted the seller before the sale and he told me that absolutely everything worked on the car. After looking it over and finding the rear hatch pull down wasn't working, I contacted him again. When I asked him about it he said he had no idea that there even was such a feature. Seemed fishy to me for a guy that had owned the car for six years. Also, the screws that hold on the part seemed like they had recently been turned along with a little electrical tape. He did not offer to do anything to remedy the problem. Although my instinct is to give him negative feedback, I have not yet received feedback from him. I'm just wondering if I'm making too big of a deal out of this and I should simply enjoy having a sweet, nearly perfect car or if I should let him have it on the feedback.

Re: Rear hatch pull down

It's a 26 year old car. Get used to small (or large) problems. Even near-perfect examples are gonna have issues from time to time. A little issue like this is not something to neg someone over.

Re: Rear hatch pull down

Interesting coincidence, but look what I just got in the mail today. I did the fix on my old car a few years back, worked just fine. Lon is great to deal with, I think it only took 4 days to get the kit from California to Maryland.

Re: Rear hatch pull down

In all reality, if the seller only had the car for six years, it's possible the pull down never worked for him. A previous owner could have lowered the latch down so that the power release would release the hatch, but to close it meant slamming it down. The early 3rd gens didn't have the automatic pull down and many rear windows were broken from being slammed so Chevy installed the pull down motor. It's possible that he didn't realize the car had the auto pull down capability.

The cost of the parts are minimal on a used car that's 26 years old, so I wouldn't worry about it. You'll probably spend more in general maintenance now that you own the car than the cost of these parts.

Re: Rear hatch pull down

If that's the only issue you find with the car, I don't think I'd worry about it much. As others have said, it's possible he didn't know about it. Or he may have just flat forgot about it if it was a car he rarely drove. Sounds like you got a nice IROC otherwise, post some photos of it so we can see what you have.

Re: Rear hatch pull down

Beautiful car.

As for the hatch release, the trouble with them is that they give you no warning what so ever. One day they work the same as they have for years. The next day, they don't work. So I wouldn't sweat it too much.

I'd take advantage of this as a good time to buy the complete package from Lon and replace everything. All I needed was a reversing valve (my hatch would open, but wouldn't close). I wound up getting new guides, new motor, new better housing. Lon is a grade A guy to deal with and I don't hesitate for a second to throw business his way.

Re: Rear hatch pull down

Very nice car and even with red seats. Like it

Regarding that motor... take it apart and check for broken parts or maybe just the brushes have fallen out of place. There may be a very simple solution.
If it's the type with the black box in the middle > open, clean and reassemble.

And don't give negative feedback for it. I agree with the others that the previous owner really may have had no idea and some issues are always to be expected, expecially that one

LOL!

The rear pull-down feature one of the few things that DOES work right on my '88.

Don't beef the dude over piddly little stuff.

Get out there and burn some rubber.

Re: Rear hatch pull down

so you are sure it is not stuck in the down position?
I had this happen to my car when the battery was disconnected and someone opened the hatch with the key.. then it wouldnt close.. and the motor didnt run... you just had to reach into it and push on a little black lever that was too low since the unit was in the down position.. then it came up and all was well.. I thought the motor was busted etc.. never slammed it.. just kept it unlocked in a garage till I could talk with people on here...

Re: Rear hatch pull down

We didn't realize there was a 'pull-down' on the hatch for a year because it didn't work when my son got his camaro. The hatch still latches down tight. Seems like a pain in the A$$ to me. Just as easy to shut the hatch manually.

Yeah, but you don't get the satisfaction of knowing that your car has a feature that's usually only on luxury cars...I'm sure I'll hate mine the second it breaks though.

Re: Rear hatch pull down

Very nice car man-love it! The pull down on my TA works for the most part, but no 100% and the one on my RS works awesome! If that is the only issue you have with the car right off the bat than count your blessings.

Totally Agree, I just got my rear hatch painted and put back on the car, now the damn thing wont shut and I don't know anything about the pulldown deal.
