Sad find at Pull a Part

I was at the Cleveland west Pull A Part this past Saturday and found the car in the attched pic. I was there looking for Camaro parts and seen this car as soon as I walked into the yard. It's an 84 TA, L69 hard top auto. Has been repainted at some point and an 86 hatch installed. The correct power buldge hood was on it and in good shape. I took the RPO sticker, but forgot it at home today. I got the horn cover, shift handle, dash bag, a center cap and the new hatch struts that were on it, oh and the spare tire. I forgot to check the mileage. The PO's dad walked by and said his son sold the car 2 months ago to a guy for $1200 and it ran awesome. The floors were patched poorly as well and the passenger 1/4 as you can see in the pic as well as my two friends lookng her over.

Sad to see these cars still hitting junkyards today. I remember 10-12 years ago, when I was still driving my 89 RS daily, yards were full of them. I guess by now, the last of the true rats are still hitting the yards.

Anything good, you would hope, will be preserved from here on out for the most part.

Yeah this car could have been saved for sure. The body was not all that bad and not sure if it ran, but the L69 looked half way clean for a better. In the same yard was a 89 RS Hard top, Lo3/700R4, not all that bad when it got there-I pulled some parts of it a few weeks ago and this time there was a 91 RS Lo3/T5 T-top car there, but was very rotted.

3rd gens don't hit the yeads everyday here, but they are poping up more then last year.

The problem in OH is not as bad as here, but similar...rust. No one DD's third gens around here. If you see one out in the winter, its already shot....except for one idiot from VT that has a pristine CFI Z28 that looks like Charlie's twin. Well, I should say it WAS pristine...it drove by the dealership yesterday with an LS1-style WS6 hood on it...

My 89 RS, 11 years ago to be exact, had been a DD for 8 of the 13 winters it had been on the road to that point. I paid a body shop good money to fix a hole under the ground effects on the LF fender that you could put your fist through. Had the car not been totalled after I sold it later that summer, it would've only gone further downhill from there.

And that was 11 years ago

The yard that I regular at has at least a dozen camaros, only 1 v-6 bird that has been pretty thoroughly picked. They are getting in a lot of 4th gens recently however.

Oh yeah the Yards are full of v6 4th gens, I have seen one LT1 car this past summer in the Akron yard.

Jason I agree about the rust issue. My RS is starting to get crusty on the under side and has some surface rust. I was going to do a budget fix up on and use it as a local driver, but I think I'm going to sell it and just keep my TA since it's got low miles on it and no rust at all. Yeah winters here are hard on cars-many older cars of all brands I see are missing rockers and part of the 1/4's, don't even want to know what the floors look like.

Re: Sad find at Pull a Part

Once you get a ton of rust, unless you have real love for something? Let it go. Let someone else deal with the problem.

My IROC still wears the original exhaust. Supposedly, the first time it had seen rain since 1993 was when I got stuck in a downpour last summer. I wasn't happy about it, either!

Rust is something I don't deal with...

If we ever do see a 3rd gen its a base model coupe in bad shape. At least you guys get decent 3rd gens for parts lol, we dont get hardly any here in our yards and we have 5 junk yards in town.

Hey Richard, there are still some in Booneville...I've had my car in mothballs for the last 15 months. Just to many honeydo projects and the price on everything keeps going up and up!

I would not say they are all decent parts cars. Well the 91 RS that was at the yard still had a nice nose and chin on it, plus the taillight and rear bumber cover was good, that was about it.

Yeah I hate dealing with rust as well, but up here unless you want to pay a high price you will not get a rust free car. I mean my RS is not a rot bucket, just might be more than I want to deal with. I'm sure sitting outside under the cover does not help.

Before winter I was only seeing one, it was about an 87 Firebird SE, not rotted, but paint faded bad. You see alot of 3rd gens in driveways and garages here, but not many on the road and if you do see one 9 time out of 10 it's a Camaro.

Re: Sad find at Pull a Part

When I first saw this post, I thought maybe it was the same car I got some parts from a few weeks ago. It was an 84 TA hardtop also. It was at a salvage yard and they were going to eventually scrap it also. Anyway it is not the same car. The car I got parts from only had 5x,xxx and it ran fine. The interior was immaculate and I scored a lot of stuff. I have no idea why it was in a salvage yard. I asked them how much they would want for the whole car, but they said they would make more money parting it out.http://akroncanton.craigslist.org/ptd/3646826500.html

Shortly after posting that...

On my way to work this morning, I saw an '89 IROC, dark red metallic, with gold base 15" IROC wheels. It looked mint from the angle I saw it. Hope he gave it a good undercarriage rinse when he got it home.

Re: Sad find at Pull a Part

Yeah I had my Camaro out the other night and it was dry, but when I got home there was alot of slat dust in it ERRRR, oh well it needs cleaned and fixed up anyways.

I know this time of year a F-body can be hard to sell, but if it's halfway ok try to sell it on CL. I mean last I was at Pull a Part they were paying $220 a ton for cars. So that is about $385.00 for a 3rd gen if my math is right. Seems you could get maybe $500-700 on CL for some of the cars I have seen in PAP. Like I said the guy said his son sold the TA running great 2 months ago for $1200 and now it's in the yard and he got less than $400 for it.

You guys have to remember that these are sports cars and a lot of them have been beat to death even my old 89 rs had mass issues I was lucky to find my new 89 trans am that was well taken care of the only thing wrong with it was the trans. Also these cars are not worth that much atm so a lot of people do not see that its worth putting money in them when something major does go wrong. The salvage yard that I go to there are mass third gens

Yeah I get it, I mean I would not dump a ton of money in my RS and in some ways I would not give my TA the proper restore I would love to give it as I would have twice what the car is worth in it, RIght now I'm about even in both car. Yeah alot of people do see 3rd gens as cheap, crappy cars to just drive and beat on and when done throw them away.

Yeah I hopeing it does. Well the Akron PAP has a 92 and an 85 Camaro there so this weekend I'm going to go see some more sad sights. They have been there a few weeks so I'm sure they are stripped and it does not help that a 3rd gen Fankenstineer lives a few miles away.

Speaking of driving 3rd gens in the winter. On the way to work today I seen a clean teal 91/92 Firebird hard top. The roads were not bad, but wet and alot of salt on them. Well there will be another one that rots out here soon.

Downside to a market where we have 10 cars to choose from with less than 30,000 miles on them at any given time is that it will drive the prices of "mid level" cars -- ones with 50-100k miles on them in good shape -- into the range where younger and poorer drivers are going to be able to catch hold of them. That will thin out the ranks pretty fast.

Imagine how many 3rd gens were crushed during cash for clunkers. I know it thinned out the fox body population a lot.

Because I can

Before it, I drove a 1969 C10 daily, everyone said I needed something newer and more practical, so I sold it, and bought a copy or my first car I ever owned, a blue 1971 camaro.

As soon as my iroc is back together, it will go into daily driver status.

I agree with Johnny Blaze. I drive my 92 Vert every chance I get when I am home from sea. Whats the point of having this type of car if you can't enjoy it? Besides, I meet more people who remember these cars that way.

Exactly.

I don't own a lame daily driver.

I have people walk up to me and ask about my car everywhere I stop. Get thumbs up on the road, even from the rice kids.

I take care of my car, so I have no problem driving it.

I never liked trailer queens. I can't afford to buy cars to sit under glass. I have cars to enjoy.

But, this is getting way off topic.

Looks safe sitting on those steel wheels.

Re: Sad find at Pull a Part

How about a 83 daytona pace car with 5.0 HO in it? I swear some people hve no clue whtat they have. I read in hot rod someone traded in a TTA during cash for clunkers, I seen a guy with a 92 z vert on a trailer heading for the scrapyard... the only thing I could ask him is why?
