Oddball 91 v6

Got a bit of an oddball car. The car has trans am options such as the power seats, 4 wheel disc brakes, 16" wheels, 36mm front sway bar, etc. Some parts have been removed from the car and swapped out. The disc rear end for one was taken out and a drum rear end put in (the car was wrecked at one point and the rear axle was destroyed. This was before I purchased the car). The engine code on the vin is a "t" so the original engine was the v6. I am wondering if there were any special v6 models in 1991. In some of the paperwork I have for the car, it is listed as a 1991 s/e #132.

Nope, 91 V6 would just be a iron head 3.1. Nothing special at all, Sorry.

Re: Oddball 91 v6

To rephrase the question, did they have a special options package for some of the v6 cars. Not engine but body, interior, suspension. Mind you the interior wiring harness has never been altered. The power seats had never been removed until I pulled the carpet up.

Mind you, I have never seen another base as well optioned as this car. The only reason I saved the car is because of the options.

It certainly is an odd car. It even has the deep window tint which I have only seen on a couple other cars, none of them being v6's.

Re: Oddball 91 v6

As QUICKCHICKEN noted, provide the RPO codes via a picture of the SPID sticker or go to Compnine.com and enter your VIN and copy/paste the RPO codes listed for that VIN.

While there was a "Special Edition" (S/E) Firebird model by Pontiac, 1985 was the last year. My order sheet shows the 16" tires were "N/A" on the base Firebird. Given that the vehicle has had prior work, it's possible more things were changed than known.

Also, given that you stated paperwork show that it's numbered, it's possible it was an aftermarket deal or not related. Pontiac didn't number the Formulas, GTAs or Trans Ams (i.e, top model cars) and so numbering any V6s, "Special Editions" or not, is very unlikely.

Re: Oddball 91 v6

Sounds like a loaded v6. I just visited one in a junkyard yesterday. 1991 v6 with gfx, factory cd player, rear disc, 8k tach, etc. It happened sometimes.

I agree with this post, sounds like it was a nice car, but nothing odd to me

Re: Oddball 91 v6

Rear disc is the only odd option I've heard of on a thirdgen V6 car. Esp in 91 when some 350 A4 and 305 5spd cars that were supposed to get disc, didn't get them because of the shortage.

16" wheels were NA on the Base Firebird... They were available on the Base Camaro however.

Re: Oddball 91 v6

It sounds like a car that someone put together with parts from other cars as you have several features that were just plain not available on base Firebirds (Ultima seats, 16s, big sway bars).

When you say you have paperwork listing it as an S/E, where is the paperwork from? Directly from GM, or a dealership? Sounds like either a dealer add-on package, or a something from a custom shop. Either way, it's interesting, but never going to have any kind of real value as it's a V6.

Re: Oddball 91 v6

The paperwork looks like dealership paperwork. Most of it is unreadable (got very wet in the back of the car). The power seats are what baffle me. I thought they had been spliced in but when I had the carpet out, I traced all of the wiring out and didn't find any splicing. I wish I had the build sheet. Is there anywhere I could look online to get a duplicate of my build sheet?

Re: Oddball 91 v6

The other weird thing is that I have to look up some of the parts for a 1993 firebird. Egr valve equipment all has to be looked up for a 93 and my trans torque converter is for a 4l60e (p.s. I know that the 4l60e is the electronic shift version of the 700r4). I call it franken car.

Re: Oddball 91 v6

What is your Vin#? Check it on compnine.com That should tell you what the car came with. Mystery solved.

Re: Oddball 91 v6

I ran the pro codes and the car has all the codes for the power seats, 16 alloy wheels, and the disc rear end. I think it was a special order car to be honest.

Or Post your VIN. At this point all you have is hear-say.

And until you can give us some definitive proof... Just between you and me, there is nothing to back it up.

Agreed...running the VIN through compnine will prove it one way or the other. If his claims are true, this is new and certainly interesting information for us.
