G92 without rear discs??

Ive been out of the third gen scene for a while but I have a friend who has a few and is selling his 1989 G92 5 speed IROC. I looked at the RPO codes in the center console and since it's been a while, the only code I recognized was "G92". The problem is the rear end the car came with (when he got it) had rear drums! Is it possible for any of these cars to not have all the associated options with the G92 package like rear discs? I know its possible the previous owner could have stole it or smoked it. It's never been wrecked, no rust anywhere, original paint (thats fading), full options like bose, power seat, rear defrost, pw, pl, etc.

I am planning on going back over there for another inspection and just want to know if this could be a "light G92" example. I plan on looking for the J and N10 codes.

Thanks and here are some pics of this possible new toy...

Car: 89 Camaro Iroc Z
Engine: 305
Transmission: MK6 World Class T5
Axle/Gears: 9 bolt had 3.45's, now 3.27 gears
Re: G92 without rear discs??

That's a nicely optioned Iroc, minus the drum brakes out back. I don't understand why a customer would not want a stouter rear with disc brakes! lol. Next time you look at the RPO codes look for GM3 which is the RPO code for the 9 bolt with 3.45 gears. Also look out to see if has J65 which is 4 wheel disc brakes, or if it has the J50 or J41 drum 10 bolt rear RPO codes with Gu6 (3.42) gears. Please post up the build date which will be on the drivers door, I suspect this car might have been built late in 89. Overall it's a cool car and I would rock it! Hopefully this info will help authenticate this Iroc

Re: G92 without rear discs??

I can't remember what year range it was, but I think they had a shortage of disk brake parts and started using drum axles. I'm sure I read it on here somewhere.

Re: G92 without rear discs??

Will do. I am supposed to go out there tonight or Saturday. I am guessing the same about the N10. Either way it has a disc brake rear in it now with 3.42's that's out of his tubbed 9 second 92 Z28... You can actually see (sort of) the rear end that came out of it in the first pic laying against the fence. He did say it had 3.73's in it. The cars got a couple small dings in it but for the price I'm paying, I'm thinking it's about to be mine!

I want to say that was later, 1991 maybe?

That may explain it, if it turns out to be the optioned 3.73 rear end it's coming with me.

Re: G92 without rear discs??

Get a pic of the SPID, that will give us all the info we need. There was no disc shortage in '89. Either this car has an LB9/T5/3.08/10 bolt drum combo or an LB9/T5/3.45/9 bolt disc combo with N10 if it was later production. If it is coded "G92" it is the latter.

Anything different and this car has seen shenanigans in it's past life.

Re: G92 without rear discs??

The console being swapped is a GREAT guess , check the VIN# and see if they match. I found a G92 (rear disc) car being parted and it had the N10 exhaust - I went ahead and got both!
ANY IROC in 89 were disc EXCEPT verts - those had drums, even G92.

I like that car, I could not find it on CL in Austin. Were is he selling
it?

In '89, the ONLY Camaros with rear discs were all 5.7s or G92 LB9 five speeds. G92 was NOT available on the '89 convertibles.

Re: G92 without rear discs??

Im probably going to run out there tomorrow and get some more info after work. The car is not listed on any site as it wasn't for sale. I simply texted him out of the blue and asked if he was selling it yet and he asked if I was serious. For as clean and original as this car is, I doubt the console was swapped but you never know. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Re: G92 without rear discs??

It is in fact a real G92, J65 N10 car. The vin on the RPO matches the one on the dash. Someone jacked with the rear end set up and put a rear end with 3.73's. Whats in it now is whats supposed to be in it. A rear disc 3.42...
I went ahead and bought it

That car would be the one I would want - It would be a 5speed hardtop match to mine. Congrats on buying - when you want to sell it, please LMK first.
