NOTES: From 85 - 90, the Trans Am and GTA I believe did not get the RPO for the Lower color, I believe they were encoded with the WW# RPOs. Here is what I believe to be correct for those colors, may not be exhaustive, but a start at least 84 I do not have any information, I suspect it should be the same, but the info was not there to be determined.
WW1 - White (40 or 11
WW2 - Silver Met (13)
WW3 - Med Gray Met (87)
WW4 - Black (19 or 41)
WW5 - Lt Chestnut aka Champagne Gold(60)
WW6 - Flame Red Met (74)
WW7 - ?
WW8 - Bright Red (81)
WW9 - ?
Hope that helps

NOTES: From 85 - 90, the Trans Am and GTA I believe did not get the RPO for the Lower color, I believe they were encoded with the WW# RPOs. Here is what I believe to be correct for those colors, may not be exhaustive, but a start at least 84 I do not have any information, I suspect it should be the same, but the info was not there to be determined.

Re: Firebird Color Availability Year to year
Good info okfoz, Is this is just a typo since all other 81's don't show Met ?
Also...... When researching the paint code for my 88 GTA, I found 81U, I don't know what the U designates so when I go to buy paint do I just use 81 or 81U ?
Thanks,

What a boring name for a color. Automotive should use more playful names for paint colours like the household indoor paint names. Instead of "Bright Red" it could be called "Stripper's Lips".

well i always thought pontiac was creative with their paint scheme names in the past, like lucerne blue, or starlight black, or Sunset Orange Metallic. I always liked the name Flame Red Metallic...I think the camaro (3rd gen) had the same color paint only it was called something else...

Re: Firebird Color Availability Year to year
I only found it for the GTA, and as a 2 tone on the Firebird, it was later available as a solid color on the Formula and Firebird. Not available as a 2 tone on the Formula, I have 3 versions of the order sheets, none of which show it for the Trans Am in 1989...
If you have a reference I would be more than happy to add it. Even possibly a car with the RPOs showing as such.

Here's a Pontiac Bulletin about the Flame Red 74, thanks to GTASourcepage:
When I ordered my 1989 Formula 350 (in '88), Van Nuys replied to my dealer that "Flame Red Metalic was a Trans Am only" color, and tried to cancel my order. I had also had spec'ed the 2-tone delete option. I traded the car in '95, and doubt that I can find any paperwork. This was the only car that I have ever ordered, and I remember all the details intimately.

Thanks for posting this. Apparently I placed my order prior to October 24th, 1988. The sleezy dealership took credit for interceding on my behalf, and said that THEY had told them (Van Nuys) to "just build the car anyway".

Dealers I think often would rather not sell certain things. It is kind of like they have no desire to go a little bit out of their way to make a customer happy.. It is like the 1LE cars, I have heard where people had tried to order them only to be told they do not exist...

The dealership (phoney baloney BS based business) told the factory (engineering based business) to "just build it anyway". Yeah right.
Simply place your order with the salesman with the right clout, he'll fix you up with a nice little 5.7 liter TPI, 5 speed and a 3.73 posi.

True, but my point is that order restrictions are in place for a reason (may not be a good reason), and they cannot be short circuited by dealership request for a one off.

The code 75 red for my 1983 T/A is called "Spectra" red, not Bright red.
I think it was the same for 1982.
"Bright" red was code 81 in the later model years.
Spectra red is a lot darker than Bright red, side by side, two very different shades of red.

The 1982-1984 Pontiac Product books refer to Code 75 as "Bright Red". That may be where John got it from. As Scott Moyer has pointed out before, GM was known to use different names for the same color.
Here's the chart from the 1983 Pontiac product book:

I've seen Spectra used before. I was just saying that Pontiac's product book simply referred to it as "Bright Red" and that's the source John used - albeit I think he said he used the dealer order sheet. The attachment I posted above is from Pontiac's 1983 product book.

Re: Firebird Color Availability Year to year
As I have been an automotive painter for several years and looking up and mixing different paints, I have seen the differences in the way the different GM reds are referred to in the color matching books.
I just wouldn't want someone using this list as a reference for a restoration and take the wrong info in and get the wrong shade of red mixed for their car. But a better way would be to use the manufactures "WA" paint code, regardless of what the paint color name is.

Re: Firebird Color Availability Year to year
good point 1tin, if i was getting my car repainted i would make sure it's the correct color code as well. Hence why you go based on the SPID sheet where the color codes are located. There are times when i had to get the paint code for certain vehicles when matching parts i'm ordering, so i don't get paired with the different shades and ending up with the wrong color coded part.
I always hated when people called my car color "maroon", yeah it's a universal lingo for the color of my car, but i've always referred it as "flame red metallic" per dealer code/spid sheet. Plus it has metallic paint in it, as it's not a flat color!
"Spectra Red"- i like that name. See! As i said before Pontiac always had a knack with some "colorful" names...

Re: Firebird Color Availability Year to year
However I do know for a fact that at one time it was quite possible to get a car painted any color you wanted, even if it was not offered for a particular vehicle. That is why there are 2 1987 Yellow T-type Buick Regals out there. A friend of my fathers, his name is Brian, wanted a Yellow Turbo Buick Regal, the dealer said it was NA, After some coercion, twisting of arms and haggling the factory went ahead and made the car. They actually made two, one for him, and the other was a stock item for the dealership. It has become almost unheard of today, but back then things were possible, when you had the money and you had the contacts. Keep in mind the car is in Flint, MI, where the home of Buick was at the time. Brian also made parts for GM, so I am sure he had some "friends" But never generalize. Things are possible that most of us consider impossible. What is probably the most interesting thing about the story is it was actually a Grand National, but they used regular bumpers on the car like the T-type... And yes, I have seen the car, I have spotted it actually at the Sloan Buick Research Gallery in Flint. Whether or not it was a GN I do not know, that was just part of the story of how it was made.

If you look at the color codes, 1986 was the only year that Every color changed number.
11 White Became 40
12 Silver became 13
15 Gray became 84
19 Black Became 41
26 Dk Blue became 28
30 Bright Blue became 23
50 Yellow became 51
69 Copper became 66
75 Red became 81
78 Met Red became 81
The only color I found that did not change was the 60 Lt Brown or Chestnut that remained the same...
The question must be asked, Why were all colors changed in 1986? The answer may be more simple than we might expect. Starting in 1986, the BCCC process was implemented on the Firebirds and Camaros. Now I have read where people claim to have a BCCC 85, so it may have been a crossover mid year. Nonetheless, it is the only year to have almost every color number (except the one) change... IT would make sense.
As for the difference in the colors, yes they are different, my 83 Camaro and 83 Trans Am are slightly darker than my 91 Firebird.
The name itself is not important, it is the number associated with it.
Now that I said all of that, I am not sure that the color that was originally applied to the 86-92 cars is still available. The WA number is 8774, but last time I checked you could not get 8774, the only color you could get was the 8784 (I forget the exact number) My 89 is slightly darker than what is now being offered as a replacement color. My original (crappy) paint 89 next to an 84... Color is almost identical.
My 91 has been repainted, and it is a brighter color, more like your Brothers car. It may be that they changed the 81 color as well, I do not know. My friends 86 that I bought paint for was a little darker red than what I could get too...

Holy hell thank you for this:

I've trying like crazy to put a name to the color on my ground effects of my 85 so I can find touch up paint the right color. Finally, a starting point!

Light Chestnut Metallic 58/WA8575
Light Chestnut Metallic 60E/WA8590
Light Chestnut Metallic 60W/WA8606
Light Chestnut Metallic 61/WA8566
which one???? /facepalm

WW5 - Lt Chestnut aka Champagne Gold(60)
should be the same as the 60U..
My suspicion would be either of these:
Light Chestnut Metallic 60E/WA8590
Light Chestnut Metallic 60W/WA8606
Go to an automotive paint store, look through their books, specifically 1985, and then look for the light chestnut. I probably have the WA paint colors around here somewhere I just do not remember where right now.

I have been eyeballing a 1985 hardtop TA with the super plush red/russet and grey interior. Unmolested(neglected otherwise) and I am still circling whether or not I should pick it up on the sheer fact it's weird and the price is nearly right the 'stable' is large. I don't see them often. Given the most I see are black, and/or red.
But I am not a hardtop person. LOL

Re: Firebird Color Availability Year to year
Thanks for the list Okfoz. I started the earlier thread about 91 & 92 colors. I was also wondering about how many of each color they made. Since I started looking for a project car, I just noticed the great majority of them were Red, Black and White. I didn't know if this was just the luck of survivors or those three colors made up 40 to 50% of the production numbers. GTA's and TA's even more so. I've only seen 1 Aqua and 2 yellow Firebirds up for sale. Only one yellow one was a Formula. I have to believe dealers would have ordered more of the big three colors anyway.
I take from the list that the common colors changed between 91 and 92 or is that just a change in name only?

Re: Firebird Color Availability Year to year
I guess I'm asking about the difference in Whites. I see the other is the use of met colors or not between years.

Re: Firebird Color Availability Year to year
Ah, yeah it's LG4 auto so that's a pity. I was impressed that it ran and drove given that it's been sitting awhile, ran way better than expected. I'll think on it and run some of the codes for interior etc and see if there are any unexpected perks. It drove itself from Kansas to Texas to Oregon I'll give it some leeway for being a 'clinger'.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Re: Firebird Color Availability Year to year
91-92 10U Bright White is the brightest White
82-85 11U is Not quite as bright of a White as the 10U
86-90 40U is even more Pale in color.
You park them side by side and you can see there are differences. Here is a pic that shows the difference between the 1984 White (11U) on the right, and the 1989 TTA White (40U) on the left. You can only really see that there is a difference between the two when parked next to each other)
I do not have a pic showing the difference between either of those an the 91-92 white.

Re: Firebird Color Availability Year to year
Got this file online somewhere years ago. Not sure if it's accurate, but it's 7 for 7 on the F-body's that I know the paint codes on.

Re: Firebird Color Availability Year to year
eseibel67,
Thank you for this. I might just trim it up for third gens if I ever get around to it.
Unfortunately I found one quick error, in 1989 there was no Yellow on the Camaro. Yellow (51) stopped mid-year in 1988, then it changed to Orange Metallic (Very similar to the sunset orange on the later 4th gens) for a partial year.
Good stuff.
John

Re: Firebird Color Availability Year to year
Do any of you know which colour interiors came with which colour exteriors for the Trans AM GTA? I'm specifically interested to know whether the Red interior was available on the Bright Red GTA. I've seen quite a few of the Flame Red GTAs with the Red Interior but no Bright Red ones. If anyone's an expert in this area it would probably be useful to have a interior-exterior colour matrix posted here for future reference for others.

Re: Firebird Color Availability Year to year
Facts:
1) The Red Interior (72) (Carmine) was only for 87-88 for the GTA
2) For 1988, the Carmine Red was NA on the GTA, and none were produced. (5521 total, 3796 Base, 1012 Formula & 713 Trans Am)
So that basically leaves us with only 1987... And that information is scarce, There was no Leather Carmine color available in 1987, so they would have been all cloth seats.
The following colors and models could be had with the Red interior in 1987
74U Flame Red Metallic - Base Firebird, Trans Am & GTA (NA on Formula)
40U White - Firebird, Formula
13U Silver - Trans Am ONLY
Therefore to answer your question: NO there were no Bright Red GTA's with the Red (Carmine) interior.

Re: Firebird Color Availability Year to year
Thanks for this info; this helps with a purchase decision on one. I was torn between getting the Flame Red one with a Carmine interior or holding out for a Bright Red with Carmine - now I think I'll go with the Flame Red and get creative with a new custom paint job!
