1LE question for the experts
Some of you may have seen my other thread about the 91 1LE I just acquired. The car is probably a 9.75 on a 1-10 scale. It is very, very nice and very unmolested. It does have an SLP cat-back on it and an SLP underdrive pulley, but that's it.
The question I have is about the rearend - everything I have read about the 3rd gen 1LE cars says that the G92 RPO code signifies the performance axle...and that 1LE was triggered when G92 was ordered and G80 and A/C were NOT ordered. THIS car has the G92 RPO and it also shows the G80 RPO....and 1LE also shows up on the RPO tag - HOWEVER - this car does not have the 9-bolt axle under it, it has the GM 10-bolt. Did they stop using the 9-bolt at some point prior to 1991? There is also NO chance its ever been swapped out, I know the complete history on the car. Hell, it even came with a box of original parts that have been swapped out over the years (dist cap, plug wires, etc.).

Re: 1LE question for the experts
Welp - I think I have answered my own question. It appears that '89 was the last model year the 9-bolt Borg Warner axle was used in any F-body.

Re: 1LE question for the experts
Yup certain things change year to year and were different between Firebird 1LEs and Camaro 1LEs. For example there are some with A/C and even fog lamps and radio's.

Re: 1LE question for the experts
My car is completely stripped - plain jane. It does have an AM/FM radio (no cassette player), but that's it.

Re: 1LE question for the experts
It should be noted that some cars actually got the B&W axle in 1990... I suspect it was over-run from 1989 and they just used them in production. Technically they were supposed to be the 10 bolt Saginaw. There are no 1990 cars with the B&W axle RPO however...

Re: 1LE question for the experts
Sounds reasonable - what is the RPO for the B/W Axle? I thought it was G92.

Re: 1LE question for the experts
There was no specific RPO that denoted the B&W axle, it was based on the axle ratio. 2.73 (GU2), 3.23 (GU5), 3.42 (GU6) were all Saginaw gears, 2.77 (GH3), 3.27 (GW6) & 3.45 (GM3) were all B&W gears... In essence they did get a unique RPO when the B&W was called for but it would be incidental as there was no RPO stating "B&W" Also no 1990's came with these RPOs (GH3), (GW6) or (GM3) on the SPID sheet but there may have been some with them installed...

Re: 1LE question for the experts
Your car would be a later 1990, so chances are it would be a Saginaw gear... Crawl under it and count the bolts on the back of the pig.

Re: 1LE question for the experts
The fact that you have GU6 tells me that it's a 10 bolt. Also, in response to your first post, G80 was not part of what triggered the 1LE option. G92 and AC delete were the triggers. G80 is poistraction and G92 is performance axle. The G92 is a package, not an individual option. By ordering G92, you got the stronger ratio, posi, engine oil cooler, supposed to get rear discs, but they weren't always available, and in the later years you would get dual catalytic converters.
