Build Date/Sale Date?Post yours

My car has a build date of 8/89 (Van Nuys CA) and the original owner bought it new 5/19/90 (Baltimore,MD.). It seems like a long time between the build and sale date. What do you think or know? Post yours

Re: Build Date/Sale Date?Post yours

I imagine the original owner had to make a decision 91 Z28 or 90 IROC at the dealer based on the date of sale.

Good call adding locations. I edited my post to include them as well.

Date of Build - May 1, 1985, Norwood, Ohio
Date of Shipping - May 3, 1985 to Ashland Ohio

I am not the original owner so I cant tell you when it took original ownership. I would have to guess it was a day or so after it shipped because it was a special order car. Its not like it sat on a dealer lot for months...

So far only Spring/Summer sales, go figure. I wonder why my car sat for 8-9 months before being purchased. Maybe it was the red on red.

That is strange. Especially since 1990 was the last year for the IROC-Z. You would think they would have all been scooped up as they hit the dealers...

I'm guessing the red/red, combined with winter in MD!

I love the red interior. Not sure everyone feels the same.

I overlooked the winter aspect. I saw the 8/89 build and 5/19/1990 purchase date and forgot all about it. Thanks for pointing that out.

Sometimes it's hard to guess why tho. We bought a 2010 black Tahoe that sat on the lot nearly a year. Our 2006 Ram 2500 sat on the showroom floor for 8 months. Who knows why.

Re: Build Date/Sale Date?Post yours

I remember when the 91s came out. It might have been the buyer waiting to see the new car and then deciding if he liked the ground effects and hood blisters. I'll be honest that I didn't like the new ground effects when the '91s first came out. If I had a choice between a 1990 IROC-Z and a 1991 Z28, both new at the dealer, I would have chosen the IROC-Z. I love the '91 ground effects now, but I still don't like the spoiler. That and the fact that it was winter are probably the two best answers.

I agree he probably wasn't too keen on the styling changes for '91 (lets not forget the rims). He probably also had been eyeing the IROC-Zs from the time they came out since he owned an 84 Z28. It just took him a while to pull the trigger.

Re: Build Date/Sale Date?Post yours

I wish I knew what my build date was…the door tag is faded beyond legibility. I could probably get the invoice date from GM archive and pin the build date between that and 12/31/89 since '90 production ended by the end of '89, but it would be nice if there was another way to get the exact build date.

Re: Build Date/Sale Date?Post yours

My 87 was built in December of 86 at the Norwood plant. I don't know when it was purchased but I was told the original owner ordered it so I'm sure he took delivery in early 87. It was delivered to Doug Chevrolet in Akron Ohio according to my window sticker.

I remember that as well. When I went to check them out I didn't like the third brake light right in the middle of the inside of the rear window. I hated (and still do) the new spoiler on the Z28s as well as the hood blisters and the new 16"wheels. I did like the fact that the 91 RS now got the same tail lights as the Z28. I ordered my RS with the smaller 15" wheels and had them chrome plated. I remember it was October of 1990 and they had 1 IROC left on the lot. It was a stripped 5 Speed hard top car in white with the 15" IROC wheels that I always thought looked funny. The sticker was just over 15 grand and I wanted it. My RS actually cost more then the IROC but I couldn't afford the insurance on the IROC being only 20. Im sure I could have gotten a smokin deal on that IROC. No one wanted it because it was a stick and had ZERO options other than the IROC package and correct me if I am wrong but the TPI that it had was still an option? I don't even think it had AC. Anyway I can remember that day like it was yesterday.

No AC, 5 speed, hardtop, no options... Sounds like a 1LE. Lol. They probably didn't have 15" wheels tho...

Thanks! I didn't know if the LO3 was standard in the IROC in 90 or not.

Thats what I was thinking after reading about the 1LE on here. I never knew about it back then. It was the least optioned IROC I had ever seen. But it did have the gray and yellow stripe package. I thought the 1LE cars were stripe delete? And If I can remember right it did have a radio in it. Didn't the 1LE cars come without a radio?

I'm not 100% sure on stripes but I do think they were radio delete.

They were not required to be radio delete. They also had stripes. The only requirements for 1LE were 350/auto with G92 and no AC or 305/5-speed with G92 and no AC.

My 92 RS was built 8-12-92. Purchased 8-28-92 from Paddock Chevrolet in Kenmore NY. It was the last 3rd gen they sold.

Re: Build Date/Sale Date?Post yours

It would be a trip if I was looking at a 1LE and didn't even know it. I have a feeling that the 1LE would have had the 16" wheels though. According to Scott it required the G92 package which had the J65 brakes. Did the J65 brakes fit behind the 15" wheels? That car had to be sitting for a while. I remember reading here somewhere that all 1990 IROCs were built in 89. That means that it was there for almost a year because I saw it in October of 1990.

To The OP. Do you know if the dealer that sold your car new ordered the car, or was it sent to another dealer and traded to the selling dealer?

That is correct. All 90 IROCs were built prior to December 31, 1989 due to GM lost the iroc name in 1990, to Dodge. Hence the 90 Shelby IROC Daytona (turd). Lol

I have no idea. I need to do some more research. Any ideas? I believe its still a Chevrolet dealership today but under a different name. The only paperwork I have is the GMAC Financial Services Conditional Sale Contract that lists the car as new with cash price of $19,185.50 including taxes, tag, and title.

Re: Build Date/Sale Date?Post yours

The 1LE brakes will not work on the 15" rims. The car couldn't have been a 1LE.

I also remember being in a dealership in 1993 and they had a purple haze RS on the floor for a ridiculous price. Since it was a leftover, I tried negotiating with the dealer on a better price, but they wouldn't budge. The had a supplemental sticker on the car that jacked the price way up. I asked why they were asking such a ridiculous price and I was told the car was "special". He said it wasn't the "run-of-the-mill RS. It has a 350 and is supposed to be sold to government or police only". I said whatever and walked away. That car is now sitting in a garage in Rochester, MN

Thanks! I had a feeling that the 15" wheels wouldn't work on the 1LE. Wow a purple haze B4C car! Do you recall what the ridiculous price was? I hate dealer mark ups. I was looking at a 2014 Shelby mustang at the Ford dealer where I bought my wife's car last sunday. The MSRP was 66 grand and they wanted an extra ten grand over. People who pay ADMs are suckers! If no one paid them, they wouldn't exist. I guess if you have to be the first to be seen in the latest and greatest you will wipe your rear with ten grand.

Lol funny you say that. My old man has a 14 GT500 he got in early 13. He ordered it and was one of the first ones to have a 14. They tried to sucker him for 10 grand. He did end up paying $1,000 over just to get it so fast.

In 02 I tried to buy the last Ram Air T/A at the local Pontiac dealer. They hassled me and tried to jack up the price so I walked across the street and bought a yellow C5 Corvette. lol dumb asses. In the end, I probably would have rather had the ram air!

On both of my Trans Am's there is a sheet that list the dealer who ordered the car from the factory. I can't remember if that information is also listed on the window sticker and/or build sheet? I'll look when I get home in the morning.

Re: Build Date/Sale Date?Post yours

The IROC-Z was built late 3/87 and bought early 6/87 in MN. Cost of the car itself was $19,815 and the grand total was $21,189. That was a decently expensive car then lol.

That was the price of the car with tax and title. IIRC, the car was bought outright also, so someone apparently had money lol. I have to look through my mountain of paperwork for the car again someday.

Re: Build Date/Sale Date?Post yours

1987 Formula: Special-ordered 10/86, Norwood-built 12/86, drove it home 1/6/87.

1983 Z28 HO: Special-ordered 4/83, Van Nuys-built 6/83, drove it home 7/10/83.

1982 Z28: Spec'd to special-order in 4/82, but the dealer had one similar arriving in a couple of days, so I purchased that one, Norwood-built(most-likely 3/82), drove it home 4/82.

Gee Leonard, that's like the last day they built these cars. I wonder what place your car was on the assembly line.
