So last summer I bought an 85 Z28 off of my buddys grandma with only 5600 original miles. She bought it brand new in 1998 from a local dealership here in Ohio who had it sitting in their showroom for almost 13 years. She drove it till 2001 when she got ill and she later passed in 2004. From there the car sat outside at her house and slowly deteriorated till my buddy moved out of town and offered me the car before auctioning off the rest of her belongings. It runs and drives but needed some work from sitting so long as well as a new paint job. With spring rolling around I decided to start restoring it and Ive been researching the Vin number trying to find out more about the car. The Vin is 1G1FP87H2FL497987. The vin says this car was from the Van Nuys plant, Yet everything ive read says that those numbers started at 500001 and went up from there. So I was wondering if this was some kind of special car, considering it sat in a show room for 13 years? Does anyone else have a car like this or know what this is or could it have just been mis-titled from the factory? or am i decoding this wrong? I still have the original title, Vin Tag, And trim sheet and the numbers are all the same. Any information would be helpful

I'm not too good on VIN decode, but I know the engine "H" is the plain vanilla 305.

Should be an easy restoration if the paint is just burnt off. As long as it wasn't sitting on grass or dirt it should still be good.

Ya from what ive read its got the most basic 305 that came in the car that year. The paints just damaged from the sun, Along with the carpet fading, Dash Pad Cracking and back seat being sun stained. I plan on basically replacing the whole interior of the car and trying to make it look like it did the day it left the factory.

The letter "L" in your VIN confirms the car left the Van Nuys, CA plant. Im not positive on the vin sequence for Van Nuys cars. Its a shame the car sat in the sun. If only it was in a garage all these years how much less work you would have had to do....

Your VIN indicates it was built at Van Nuys.
