Does anybody know if they were still putting these tags on the 1990 cars? I was looking at a friends 1990 convertible and it didn't have those in the usual places or the ASC sticker on the driver door jam?

 

My '88 has them.

 

my 91 formula has p/n along with date stamps on the front fenders and the underside of the hood. I did not notice any vin numbers on the fenders or hood. I currently have the fenders and hood removed from the car. The only thing I noticed is that the fenders and hood are stamped with a month and date code that reflect the correct date that the car was assembled. I can say this with 100% certantiy as I am the origional owner of this car and ordered the car from the factory.

 

From what some members have posted in the past, it appears the VIN stickers on the body panels may have stopped around 1990 or 1991. I don't know if there has been any more information to narrow that down.

 

Does anyone have a 1990 or 1991 Camaro with the VIN tags on the hood, deck lid, door jams, inside of the front fenders, or under the rear bumper cover? I'm trying to determine if they stopped doing this in 1990, since I know they did have them in 1988, 1989 and possibly in 1986 and 1987.

I was recently at a salvage yard and saw an 89 trans am, and there was a vin sticker on the front bumper beam. It did match the vin of the car and drew attention to my car as there were no vin stickers installed in april of 1990. My car is a 91 firebird which was delivered in 1990. I know this does not answer your question, but I will follow your original post, as my car was in an accident and the vin coding and date coding of parts has become one of my concerns as I look to replace parts. By looking at the 89 trans am and my 91 which was manufactured in april of 1990, I can only conclude that there is a possibility that the coding of body parts my have switched from vin coding to only date coding between 1989 and april of 1990.

not sure if this time frame would apply to all gm cars though.

Just out of curiousity, what month was your friends car munfactured, was it before or after april of 1990?

I'll go back and look at the manufacture date on the 89 trans am, i hope that we can help you narrow the date switch down.

For what reason is the vin coding a concern to you?

 

The car is a 1990 IROC convertible so all I know is that it had to be built before the last day of December of 1989. Since they quit making them and started the 1991 in January that year.

 

I'll get back to you this weekend on that 89 trans am, hopefully I can find a build date.
So we now know that between dec 31, 1989 and april 1990, there where no vin dating of parts that we can verify.

I'll get the vin from the 89 tran am and have a friend at a gm dealership run the number for a build date.

I have a question for you about my 1990 firebird, did gm vin code the engine blocks? On my 64 rivi, there is a vin number stamped on the engine top intake flange that matches the body vin.

what means did gm use during this year to match the engine block to the body?

The axles have a build date and location code and I've looked at that on my car but never found anything on the engine.

I know everything is number matching as I am the sole owner.

My '90 does not have VIN tags. Build date forever lost to the annals of history, unfortunately.
