For $24,900 it better come with a full tank....of gold.

I've never met anyone who compares these to the COPO's of the past.

"and all the 1le items are still on the car." -so it still has it's brakes, well I'm glad no one took those off at any point.

I mean, it's a pretty clean looking tpi 5-speed, which is nice, but yeah. Are these cars really bringing that kind of $$ these days?

Yes, they are starting to sell for this kind of money. It really amazes me that TGO is "THE" third gen enthusiast website and we as a community can't support the prices of the cars. The original muscle cars and pony cars were the cars on the street when our parents were teens. These cars were the cars to have when many of us were teens but couldn't afford them. Now, most of those 1980's teens are in their 40's and 50's and can afford the car they wanted back in the day.

I hope he gets every penny. But the missing factory steering wheel makes me nervous.

Re: Piece of History on Craigslist...

I guess that could explain it then, because I grew up seeing only rusted out, too-far-gone versions of thirdgens so I've never associated them with money (except the 100 mile garage finds, etc). I'll try to keep that in mind.

I still think the COPO comparison is a bit of a stretch though, haha.

Decades of dirt cheap thirdgens have conditioned us to believe they'll always be dirt cheap!

Re: Piece of History on Craigslist...

They weren't dirt cheap when they were new, but they were the cars to have. I graduated in 1987 and there were three third gens in the parking lot. My car cost the original owner over $21k in 1987! That was a lot of money back then. In comparison, you could buy a Buick Grand National off the dealer lot for $17k. You could also get a well optioned Monte Carlo SS for the same $17k. The Mustang GT was also priced around $15k. It's been said here many times that those growing up in the '80s knew that if you owned an IROC-Z, you were the coolest of the cool. These were not trailer park cars are trashed out junk back then. They were coveted by all.

Re: Piece of History on Craigslist...

You are wrong. I know of some that are going for very good money. The Mecum sales records show a red 1990 IROC-Z for $24,500, a 2010 auction shows $20,000 for a blue 1985 IROC-Z, we all know about the $27,000 sale of the 1985 black IROC-Z that sold again this year for $34k, and a yellow 1987 IROC-Z, owned by Matt Garrett sold in the upper $30s. He also had a 1989 IROC-Z that sold, but I don't know what price.

Low mile examples are bringing the best money today. You can still buy the run-of-the-mill IROC-Z with miles for a reasonable price, but there are many selling for top dollar. I've been offered over $20k for my car and I obviously declined. I know of another 1987 IROC-Z in burgundy/gold that was purchased this year for over $20k. They are bringing this kind of money!

I hope he gets what he is asking for it. Very clean car and has all the right RPOs to be a quick 305. Sadly could have had one in about the same shape 10 years ago with 40K on it for $2500. Nobody wanted it at the time.

Wheres the abundance of great condition camaro's? All I see are 10,000 $ pieces of junk that have been dressed up to look like the real deal, with odometers that in reality rolled over.... PPL forget there is this little thing call Carfax...

Rarely do I see a legit low mile IROC-Z or Z28 that is outstanding condition, & when you do find those, they do sell for the aforementioned prices.

BTW the folks that own those cars dont waste time putting them on Craigslist & having to deal with tire-kickers. Where do you think they go??

Where it has been proven time & time again that you can get top $$ for the right vehicle.

MECUM!

Re: Piece of History on Craigslist...

Most likely he won't get it , it's a hard market on these thirdgens, I've seen immaculate cars go for cheap and I've seen trash go for top cash, it's all about the right buyer at the right time, time is key, also some luck

100% correct. I was one of those kids and I had kids wanting to give me money to drive her. I wouldnt let anyone else touch my baby. got it for about 14K due to Dad worked for Fisher Body at the time it stickered at 20 if I recall. it was the car to have. turned heads everywhere. Could not wait for the day to be over at school to take off the t-tops and driver her home.

Re: Piece of History on Craigslist...

Don't get me wrong, the car is clean, but I'd be skeptical of the 18,000 mile clock.
The RPO sticker is beat to death and the carpet is all puckered up in the back seats. In the pic from the hatch area you can see the passenger seat is faded but not the drivers, as though it had been recovered.

Yup, this exact car has been for sale since at least 2010 when I started looking for a thirdgen.

Re: Piece of History on Craigslist...

I see rust on the strut towers, an Autozone alternator, messed up label on the upper radiator mount, and yeah that SPI label is beat to mother freakin all hell!

At 237K miles my strut towers have ZERO rust, the labels on my upper radiator mount are mint, and my SPI label is mint. Very odd.

I'm all for it going for that much but all of the surface rust under the hood, yeah I wouldn't touch it with a 10ft pole...imagine what it would look like under the car.

Re: Piece of History on Craigslist...

Good and bad, I don't have one yet, so the thought of paying like $20,000 for one is never going to happen, and the thought of a beater still being $5000 kills me if these cars go up.

Re: Piece of History on Craigslist...

One thing that people do not realize... The more expensive the car the fewer people that are 1) able to afford it and 2) are willing to pay for it. So it will take longer...

I still say we start listing our cars for insane prices to push the values up.

My friend took his 48 mile 89 IROC to Mecum and barely got it to bid to 17K. He finally got 20 from a forum member here. But his car only had 48 miles on it! These cars are never going to see higher prices than they are right now. The only ones getting close to 20K are low mile pristine examples. Then if you do buy one you can't enjoy it because if you drive it a lot, it will no longer be a low mile pristine car. Its disappointing but thats reality.

If you look back 10 years ago, that same $20,000 car back then was only $10,000...

I think too many people look at the immediate gratification, kind of like the stock market. They want to buy something for $5000 and then sell it one year later for $10,000. Like they see on those fake TV shows.

The truth is, in June of 1989 Hemmings:
-1966 SS Convertible Impala, 396/325 hp, auto A/C gages, tilt telescoping steering wheel $8000.
- 1967 RS coupe Camaro, 327/275 4 speed gages, ps, fold down seat, never rusted, one owner California car, runs great, $6500
- 1968 RS Camaro Total restoration, new everything 427 Auto... $7500
- 1967 RS Camaro Convertible 327 "Show Winner" $15,000
- 1967 Chevelle SS-396 Show winner, Super Chevy Winner, Don Garlits, Busch Gardens, Lakeland show winners... $17,500
- 1969 RS convert 350, Very nice cond., $9450

One thing is for sure, the values were better for these cars 22 years after they were made than they were new than they are for our cars new. You could buy a 1967 Camaro for how much? $5000 tops?

However I am seeing a trend of more people asking more and more for cars and in some cases getting what they are asking. Also Consider that the economics of the 1980's was much better than the economics of the teens. in 1989 the US was at a peak, we peaked again around 2000 and again in 2007. The chart below shows Employment-Population Ratio (Percentage) for those 16 years and over. What you will find is since around 2008 thru 2010 we were in freefall, and hit bottom around 2010, BUT it shows that the growth is slower than every recovery since 1966, so really for the values of any old used car to be doing anything is short of a miracle.

I do not think 3rd gens are poor performers for value, we just have a horrible economic Political climate... That and the I4 put a stigma on our generation that still haunts us
