'83 Trans-Am

Hello all, I'm back after a long spell of no Fbodys!

Picking up ann '83 TA Tuesday. I just want some input.

Car is :
1983 Trans Am
5.0 LG4
200C 3 Speed auto
2.93 Open rear diff
No AC
AM ONLY radio

Car is still owned by the original owner since 1983, has 238,000km on the clock. Never seen a winter in its life and is 100% original. Vehicle has bill of sale and EVERY bill spent on car since 1983 till today.

Car is silver with biege int.

There is 0 rust on or under the car, but the paint on the hood, roof and trunk deck has clear coat peeling.

I am getting the car for a very decent price. I think its a solid car that has potential to be a future collectable with the fact its all original and 1 owner for the last 31 years. (getting hard to find a rot free 3rd gen, let alone a 82-84)

Any input on this?

Nice! Welcome back to the 3rd gen family. Sounds like a really cool car. Please post pics.

The silver on beige sounds like a interesting combo, never seen it before.

They're only original once!

Nice. Does it have the cold air intake on it? Ive seen them on a few 83-84s. Sounds like a great car to restore and good luck.

I believe it should have the functional Ram Air on it, as it does have the air intake hood.

Re: '83 Trans-Am

i have an 83 T/A in that color code. the color is med sand gray and at the moment I cant recall the color of the panels but they are a sand gray that faded to a light cream.

my 83 is a LG4 MM5 car that was supposed to be a WS6 car but GM ran out of the G80 carrier so it got designated as a WY6. mine has pwr windows, antenna remote, hatch popper but man mirrors, locks, tilt and no cruz.

great find, had I known then what I know now my 83 would have still been in tact, now its a franken monster.

Re: '83 Trans-Am

Nice. Ya it was a eye catching find. To find a car thats been in the same owner from 31 years and to have ALL original and still with the AM radio is rare. Let alone only 238000km (147,000 miles) with NO winter miles and zero rust.

I'm debating even leaving it with the clearcoat issue and have it as a survior type car. OR get it repainted.. I may drive it for a summer and see how I feel next fall.

Re: '83 Trans-Am

Congrats on the car! Nice to have an all original car, isn't it? Particularly an early third gen. I recently picked up a low mileage 82 TA with the same trans. I know they are not known for being durable, but, I had purchased a new 82 TA (back in late 81!) with the 200 and ran a nitrous set up on it for 2 years and the trans held up. Blew up the rear end though. Lol. Btw, I thought the 83s had the 700R4.

Re: '83 Trans-Am

Thanks!

I talked to the guy more, its actually his wifes car (explains is SUPER stock condition lol) She used it only in the summer.

I'll know more tonight when I pick it up, but if its a rot free car, anything can be swaped. I called GM and they said 200C with the VIN, I also thought 83's for 700's. Ill know tonight and get some RPO's off the sticker and figure out what I'm buying!

No RPO sticker in 83, that started in 84. Dive under the seat and look for the build sheet and be careful pulling it out. Mine was tatters and had to be pulled out in sections then taped together.

Re: '83 Trans-Am

One thing to remember, Canadian cars were optioned differently than American ones. So it may be that US cars went to the 700R4 but the Canadian ones stuck with the 200C

Re: '83 Trans-Am

Not sure, but I thought the BC CC did not start until 1986, maybe mid 1985 model year... It definitely looks like a CC is pealing however...

Also the 200 trans I thought was reserved for the I4 engines after 1982... Of course like AmorgetRS stated, the car was ordered for Canada, so anything is possible...

I think the only car to get the Posi Standard was the GTA... Some engine/trans combinations did mandate the ltd slip. IE the 350, the LB9/M5, probably the L69, and the CFI, It would be interesting to see what triggered it.

I also seem to remember that the options on the early car options were all individually ordered, so it might be a checkbox

In 1983, WS6 triggered the ltd slip G80 as well as the J65. The LU5 came with the WS6 or WS7 (depending on month) which triggered the G80 & J65

The L69 came standard with the WS6, which came with the G80 & J65

WS6 & WS7 were identical except for the J65 disc brakes.

So if it has the LG4, ltd slip was not manditory.

Re: '83 Trans-Am

For the most part, I believe, I would have to do some research, that the LG4 never came standard with the Ltd slip on anything.

The top engine or two of any given year always came standard with more than just the engine. Never seen a 350, or LB9/M5, from 87+ without Ltd slip, nor have I seen an L69 or LB9 from 85 or 86 without ltd slip...

Not saying it was not an Option, just saying that it was not Standard

My 87 Formula with the LG4 was an Open 2.73...

Re: '83 Trans-Am

From what I can tell, 1982-1988 the G80 was an option on any engine, The dealer order sheets do not spell out that it was not available for anything.

Starting in 1989 and thru, the G80 was no longer an individual option, it was tied to the Engine & trans...
