History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
Guy on Facebook is selling an 88 Camaro, listing it with 54,xxx miles. I checked my 85 Firebird (which also has a "five digit" odometer, and the last digit is 1/10 miles. Checked my 92 Camaro and the last digit is also 1/10 miles) but someone is telling me that the last digit in this odometer is = 1 mile. Is that the case?
If that is the case, does anyone know why you'd have a white tenths indicator on some odometers, and a white ones indicator on another?
Yeah, I would think that's a 1/10th digit and the car probably has 105,407.3 miles on it. If you really need to prove the mileage, get the VIN number and check with the DMV for the last known mileage at the last inspection time. Is the seller touting "low mileage" and asking a high price? Maybe he/she just doesn't really know!

I actually don't think he's aware, but there is a difference between a 50,XXX car and a 100,XXX car. Both are fairly low mileage, but still a bit of a difference.
If I had to guess, I would say its possible the owner is used to looking at later year mechanical odometers that had the 7th digit for 100K & beyond. So rather than count how many digits were actually there, maybe he figured 054, is 54K? Not saying thats the case here, but I could see where that could happen.
just happened to find this picture on our this forum. So Thanks to DynoDave43 for posting the picture early this year.

I'm guessing either 105xxx or 205xxx, and judging by the looks of the picture I'm leaning towards 205xxx. The white indicator is for 1/10's of a mile, regardless of what kind of fight the guy wants to put up about it.
Yea Carfax will give you misleading information. Every time I get a smog check, my odometer is only 5 digits and reads 22,*** miles which is really 122,*** but the smog places insist they only use the visible 5 digits and don't go by my honesty about the true mileage.

Re: How many miles does this Odometer show?
I have a car that the tenths didget was added to the number when they did smog tests... it happened 3 times, so the mileage went from 5,000 miles to 55,000 miles to 6000 miles to 70,000 or something.. and that was within a year or two... Using the tenths on the Odometer was a bad idea, they should have only had tenths on the Trip Odometer...
It isn't hard to fudge the odometer readings and roll the clock back to zero in third gens. I have done it a few times on clusters that I sold to guys so the new cluster would match their old one. In Nebraska, where I live, if you purchase a vehicle over 10 years old the mileage is listed as "exempt" on the title.
Condition is key in my opinion... a vehicle with 5400 miles on the odometer wouldn't have a bezel with that many scratches on it.
