Trying to find out build date on my 91 Gta-help
Hey, Need some info on another spot besides my driver door tag for the build date because the original is illegible and i would like to order a new/blank one off ebay.
I have papers from the original owner that has the mileage statement and the dates on the papers are 3/31/90, So how much earlier could the car have been built? and then shipped to a dealer by 3/31, and could you really get the next model year in march of 90? that seems early to me but the papers and the car are legit.
Any help would be great, thanks

Re: Trying to find out build date on my 91 Gta-help
Your car is legit, volume production of 1991's began in Jan 90. My '91 engine was assembled on Jan 23 of 90. Plenum cast in '89, wheels from Dec '89, etc. Someone here who has a compnine acct can tell you the actual build date if your VIN is in their database. Chances are it is as the 91 records are fairly complete. Nice car!

Just curious, what's the last six digits of your VIN? It is the sequence number. IIRC, my car was built on 20Mar1990.

Re: Trying to find out build date on my 91 Gta-help
Quick question by any chance are the last six sequence numbers on anyone's '91's vin lower than mine (202043) but your cars date was after march 8th? because i've been messaging another member and his '91 gta has a lower sequence number but was built in late march and we have been wondering why or if that means anything, any insight would be great thanks.

I can't say for certain that they were built in order, but would assume they were. 1LE cars possibly batch built as were the Players series cars.

Re: Trying to find out build date on my 91 Gta-help
This is weird. I am who Roblen is talking about. My build date is the 20th of March, 1990 but my sequence number is 201230 which is obviously a lower sequence number with a later build date.
Re: Trying to find out build date on my 91 Gta-help
PM your VIN and I will check to see what Compnine's website says for build date, which is where I got Roblen's info.
One thing to keep in mind is that issues did occur on the assembly line (such as part/fit issues) and vehicles would get offloaded from the line and then return at a later time when it was corrected.

Re: Trying to find out build date on my 91 Gta-help
blacksunshine91's shows 1990-03-02 for a build date. Since Compnine's data had to come from GM to have the SPID contents, the build date as shown is some type of build date event - unless there's a conversion or record error.
Phil could probably provide some input on the assembly line. On the Ford side, for example, there's more than one date on a vehicle.

Re: Trying to find out build date on my 91 Gta-help
My 1992 T/A Convertible's build date as shown on Compnine is an exact match for what my copy from GM's VIS report shows as a build date. I haven't found my invoice to make sure that document matches. One thing to note is that I have two build dates that are 1 week and a few days apart on that same GM VIS report. Don't know if this has something to do with the convertible process or GM mixing event dates.

I'll have to look again when I get home tonight. I was pretty certain that I had a 20th build date. I will get back to you with what I have at home.

Yeah if you have two dates i would bet its because of the convertible process.

Re: Trying to find out build date on my 91 Gta-help
I went back and looked at my paperwork. My build date is listed as 02 March 1990, not the 20th. Don't know why I remembered it as the 20th. Guess that clears that up a bit.

So compnine is accurate, and wow our gta's were only 6 days apart from being built.

Re: Trying to find out build date on my 91 Gta-help
Just realized, that's 800 cars in six days going by the sequence number difference of our cars.
Re: Trying to find out build date on my 91 Gta-help
According to Leonard who has the last 1992 Camaro and toured the Van Nuys assembly plant, they were building 406 cars a day - atleast by that point. Remember, they were building both Camaros and Firebirds.
