History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
Exactly. We can now confirm that this car has had paintwork done, which many of us called out years ago and were threatened with lawsuits for slandering the car's appearance

I bring up a warranty DS, because I've heard that if you had any high speed vibration complaints, the dealers would simply replace your steel DS with an aluminum one.
Paint thickness on the quarters and B pillars are almost double normal. Probably not claybar residue.
Were these cars painted by robots in 88-89 or were they still painted by a person? If a person, I would not trust paint thickness readings as the be all-end all on originality.
These cars were painted by robots in the '80s. The doors, fenders, hood and quarters were on the car when it got painted so the paint readings should be close on all vertical surfaces and probably slightly higher on horizontal surfaces.
It seems that bidding has stopped since the paint meter readings. As we said, beautiful car and well worth the current bid, but the notoriety created by the insane rantings of the previous owner will always haunt this car. What a clusterfvck on his part.
I think it’s gonna go considerably higher before it ends. 30 grand for a 357 mile Iroc is way cheap in 2025, paint work, 200 page thread controversy, or not. The stripe delete package and color are what would keep my off of it personally, but that’s just my personal taste.

@scottmoyer may I ask what is the tool you're using to read paint thickness?
I'm not doing any paint readings. I posted the pics that were posted on Bringatrailer.com. I thought it would be good to add those to this thread as it proves our case from years ago.
Even with the paint work, this should be a $50-$60K car, and not the $30 something it always gets. I'd be surprised if it breaks $40K in the next few hours. And that's because of the deception orchestrated which has followed this car like a dark cloud.
DX3 hurts this car imo. I might be in the minority but I think Irocs with DX3 look plain and boring. If I owned this car, I would put stripes and decals on it. I think it's hideous without them.
Wouldn't that be funny after this long thread? I know one person whose head would explode!
You'd be told you purposely helped hold down the value of this car, all these years, so that you could steal it later.
BTW, it's nice to come here and see the people that are so knowledgeable on these cars. Years ago paint comments were noted on this car and now seeing the BaT listing and paint readings only further support that people here know what they're talking about and looking at!

It's a beautiful car. It's not the car's fault.
No, this car shouldn't be a $60,000 car. A 1989 Trans Am GTA in the actual condition this car pretends to be in with similar mileage should be a $60,000 car. The 1989 Trans Am GTA came with all the performance goodies, and you could have got CC1 T-tops to go along with them too. There is no way a lame 1989 IROC-Z should be anywhere near a 1989 Turbo Trans Am either.
Despite what the Performance Equipped decal on the windshield proclaims nothing about this 1989 IROC-Z is performance equipped.
This car is a luxury highway cruiser. It's 5.7 liters of 2.77 geared lameness.
This car is another dime a dozen lameass IROC-Z as most IROC-Zs are. These cars bring the money because Chevy paid $5.00 to put IROC-Z decals on the doors and this car doesn't even have those. Chevy made a blue million of these IROC-Zs and most of them performance wise are lame. LG4s, L03s, and airplane gears.
1987 was the best IROC-Z. The one-time Chevy did you Camaro guys right by default. None of this G92 bullshit. You will never see a G92 Trans Am GTA. They don't exist. G92 doesn't exist if the best equipment is standard equipment.
IROC-Z The most valuable decal ever put on a car. LoL

I believe I would have sprung for a NOS assembly line correct "AC Sparkplug" oil filter for this car. OMG that big, huge bright orange FRAM oil filter.

Surprise. Knew it would go a lot higher than 30 something.

I told my brother the same thing. It would be reversible, but as long as I owned it I’d have the stripes and door decals on it. Just doesn’t look like an Iroc without em.

Re: 1989 IROC 344 original miles
Fluffy Iglesias’ bought the IROC-Z.
He's at Jay Leno's showing it off. I hope he drives the wheels off this IROC-Z and rolls the odometer over. This car needs tires smoked and many donuts cut in it.
Yup, NT555RII, the only 245/50-16 in the 555 line-ups. The other NT555 is the G2, but it's not available in 16". The NT01 and NT05 are also available in 245/50-16.
This video landed in my feed today too, and I was like, no, really?! And now we know who owns it. But by the time I saw it, it had already been posted here. I was cringing at how Leno had his hands on the hood when he opened it and closed it lol. I was like, dude, be more careful!
Those are some nice streets they were driving on. Hard to believe it's part of LA. I use those streets to get around the Valley. Wide streets, nice areas, but no traffic, and that's why I use them. They're not shortcuts, which is why so few people use them. But they're sanity savers, where you can relax and enjoy the drive, instead of fighting the traffic on the direct roads that everybody drives on. When you see driving scenes in Tarantino movies, he uses a lot of those same Valley streets, although he uses more of the "rough" ones because they're better suited to his, um, subject matter, I guess you could say.
I guess I kind of know the area Leno lives in now, because I doubt he'd have gone too far out of the way to get to those streets. Still, he probably put, at least, 30 more miles on that odometer today. Fine by me, though. And like Fluffy said, the car is for driving! And I agree.
Car sure looks better than it looked when it was posted here. Fluffy's money probably had the highest of high-end shops go through every nook and cranny to get all that clay bar residue off of it and polish it up. Very impressive now.

Well, that's his shop anyways. It's listed on Google maps and looks correct based on the fact you can match up the chin scrape scene on Google maps where he's listed, plus he has mentioned several times being right next to the airport. It's the Burbank airport. Also, he has used parts of the airport for filming cars that can't be driven on the public roads.
True, and after I posted that, it came to mind that it's his garage, not his home. But his home is likely very nearby too, since the show was in Burbank. And those streets are easily accessible from the airport.
Side note, you would know the answer to this, JT. I recently watched a YT video, I think it was the 2025 Carlisle event, and the host in the video told the people who were there listening to him that he was the author the book about Norwood. Is that the guy who started this thread? It's always interesting to see what people look like lol.
Thanks guys. Those Nitto's really look good on the car. I'm not sure how'd they handle in the turns, though.
They do look good. They probably drive decent, but you’ll feel the soft sidewall in steering response and a lot of sidewall squish and rollover in hard corners. Airing them up a little will help some.

If the guy said he was the author of the book about Norwood, then that is Phil, the starter of this thread.
Clay bar residue. DX3. Lawsuits. Resprays. Bidders and flippers. I don't care. 2.77 gears. I don't care. I like this car. Not the way I'd Personally spend $56k, or how I get my thirdgen fix on, but it's a great car. The drama wouldn't have turned me off if I was in the game for this one. Hope Fluffy drives and enjoys this car!!!!!
This may offer some explanation.. The replacement title was issued during the ban. I don't know if the ban enabled a seller to title wash, but it's worth looking into...
https://www.ohiada.org/ohios-salvage-problem/
The passage of Ohio Senate Bill 263 in December 2018 placed a ban on the BMV using NMVTIS reports/data to brand titles as salvage. This ban is in place until January 1, 2021 while a study group looks at the effect and accuracy of using those reports.
