found a TTA.....is this too much....

to make it short, pretty soon i am looking into keeping my 3.1 bird for a daily driver and getting something alot stronger...and i finally found my dream car somewhere...a 89 TTA with only 8500 miles on it...i have fallen in love with this car since my boss drove his to work on day a few years ago...my question is do you guess think this is too steep....20,000. i don't think its bad considering the milage and i will def garage is somewhere, keeping it out of the ran and snow....what do you think of the price i and thinking of maybe getting them down to 18,500 or so???

It's a bit on the high side even for that milage, but I wouldn't say it's not worth it.

I think it's a little steep. To tell the truth I'd rather have one w/ a little more milage b/c as much as I drive I'd feel bad for running the miles up on it. If you get it, make sure and check it out good. With only 8500 miles on a 12 year old car, its been sitting a lot. As long as it's been well maintained which I'm sure it has and you're not running the miles up which you won't be and you have the money go for it.

Not knowing much about the TTA, I still have to say that's too high. Also, the 8500 miles doesn't mean a perfect car. My IROC with 7500 miles has required service because it hasn't been driven. Not driving a car is more damaging than driving it. Expect to put money into it even at 8500 miles! I put $1500 into mine and it might still need more (seals, gaskets, possible fuel pump, etc)

The TTA was $32,000 brand new in '89 so that price($20,000)is not too high.

It is high because there will be alot of damage due to the low miles.

91Zman, come on! If you follow that, since my car was $28,000 new, then $20K is a fair price for it then according to you.....You have to go buy desirablity when it comes to a car like an 89 TTA

That price might seem high to someone who does not know about the car. But drive it and if you like it cost should not matter too much if you can afford it. $18,500 is about right. I looked on kbb.com (Kelly Blue Book) and the retail value of my TTA with over 100K miles was $17,100. If anyone wants to buy mine for that price e-mail me or send me certified funds.

That Motor Trend quote was way off the asking price for any of the TTA's. My sticker says $31,223.00, the dealer added $5K on top of the SRP from GM. Some dealers were asking $50K.

Apparently you never drove one, if you did you might change your attitude on some expensive cars.

I think he just meant, they're hard to imagine until you've been in one.

Still, they're pretty common around here. I've seen four, two of which were for sale.

There's one I see frequently at some dude's house down the highway that's pretty neglected. I've thought about selling my convertable and seeing if I could buy it off the guy.

Once you've driven one, you'll know why all the hype...

Well, it does depend on other things also. Does the car come with any spare parts? Almost all of the emblems are now discontinued. Same for the spark plug wires with the writing on them. Also, does it have the presentation case with the door and windshield decals, owners manual cover, cassette tape, and key fob? This case alone sells for $350-$650. Wires go for $200 and up. Emblems run $75 and up. Magazines and other related stuff can fetch high prices also.
So factor these in when you look/buy a car. I have seen cars sell for more. Doesn't mean it's worth it. Look very carefully at the car. look for damage/repaint/etc. Is it a hardtop?? These will fetch tons more money!!! The common 20th is the T-Tops/Leather. Driver's seats will also show some wear. Go to: http://www.TurboTransAm.com
Maybe someone from your area can go look with you! Post on the message board, see if anyone answers!!

Hope this helps,

George

I remember reading in a mag that the TTA sticker priced at around 25K, leather seats being the only upgrade.1500 or so units produced.0-60 at 5.2-5.5 depending on the mag.
I would not pay more than 15K for it in top shape but that's just me.It will be a pricey classic, some day, due to low production numbers like the GNXs.

What do you mean very close to what the 4th gens are running stock? LT1 4th gens are running 14.2's stock, the LS1's are high 13's. The TTA is faster then both. I definitly think the TTA is worth $20,000 with those kinda miles, but like everyone else said, it will probably need a good going over and most seals will need repalced and such. TTA's are damn rare and will always demand high prices just like GNX's, typhoon's, syclone's and even just regualar GN's. All the late 80's/early 90's forced induction V6's are gona be extreamly valuable as the years go on.

the ls1 is a strong car but they are not all that great they do not feel that fast. They do run good but my iroc is right there with the stock ones and faster than some of them. the lt1 is no 13 second car stock all that i ahve raced i have only lost to one and that was due to uncontrolable tire spin on my part. he had 4.56 gears and he was launching on slicks at the track he beat me off the line bad and i was nearly even with him and pulling up hard by the end of first gear. then i hit 2nd and the tire spinn began and he left me.

The quote's from the factory says mid 13's for the TTA but with little mods like a chip and a k&n high 12's are easy to achieve. My TTA went 13.55 right from the dealer floor and ran 12.80's after those mods and the same on the street.

Please do not tell me what stock 4th gens run. One of my best friends has a 97 Bright Green Metallic Z28 with an LT1. That is the fastest LT1 Z28, it is a 14.2 SOLID car. I've ran with him multiple times. He can NOT get it below 14.2. Im in the MFBA also and we have plenty of stock or near stock LT1's and LS1's. I've seen them run, i know what they can do. Magazines and Manufactures lie. i have also seen 2 TTA's run at RT.66 in Joliet Illinois, They were both stock or very near and were clicking off mid 13's easy. Dont mean to sound like a jerk but it really twists my nippys when people think that LT1 was sooo friggin fast out of the box.
