Re: 14K mile, MGM '88 IROC-Z

Some <expletive deleted> put that same stupid red and white pin stripe on my MGM 91 Firebird. First day in the driveway, I peeled it off. Some other nitwit had cleared over parts of the pin stripe... What a mess. And that is why my RS convertible still has it's aftermarket pin stripes that I don't especially appreciate.

The green Firebird I'm working on now, has some of the same deal. On at least the 1/4 panel(s) someone cleared up to or over the pin stripe. Assume they used it as a tape line to blend in a repaint.

Re: 14K mile, MGM '88 IROC-Z

Back in the late 80s, I remember the local Chevy dealer was having multiple cars re-cleared on the top surfaces due to acid rain. The body shop installed a pinstripe, then used that as the break point for the re-clear. I questioned the body shop on that and was told that was what the dealer wanted them to do.

Nice car! Haven’t seen that color IROC in a while!

The pin stripe is horrible.. My buddy who had the twin burgundy 87 to my 87 had a gold and white pinstripe that the dealer told him the original owner ordered the car like that from the dealer.. terrible. Looks like they want $25k on their website..

https://www.dennydotson.com/1988-Che...3/Details.aspx

I had to try to buff out a pinstripe line in a black Yukon Denali for a customer.. He scraped the hell out of his paint trying to get it off and hated how the paint was darker black under the stripe.. That’s the only thing with pinstripes and stickers.. if the basecoat fades around the sticker/stripe.. you can’t fix the color difference under the clear.. I got his scratches out and it looked better.. pretty sure he tried to take his pinstripes off with his fingernails..

I also noticed the driver side was repainted but didn’t have the heart to tell him.. He had just bought the truck from Carmax.. It was nice enough..
