Did this come with a posi?
Did this come with a posi?
I have two camaros one is a 88 my baby and I know it doesn't have one. The other one is a 86 Z-28 it had a 305 in it and i was just wondering if you guys can tell me if it has a posi in it? before i crack the case open to check. the whole car is stock and i heard is has a chance to have one but i cant find out for sure.
A chance is about right... if you have the RPO's look for G80, if its there you have posi.
Also look at the differential, does it have a stamped tag that says somethign about limited slip? if its there, its probably posi. You could also look for the stamped codes, but I've yet to see them on any of my cars.
You're probably furthest ahead to change the differential fluid and have a look for yourself.

Ok and just to double check the codes you are talking about are the ones in the side consle in between the seats? and also if it has a posi then i want to swap it would it be easier to just swap the whole rear end or just the posi? i have never done anything with gears and i heard it can be hard? also the axles would be the same spline right if i remenber right they didn't start putting in 28 spline untill like 91-92 correct? What would be the best lube to put in there the car will be both street and strip mostly street? thank you tons.

Yes, for 82-early 91 they're in the console

ya lost me, if its posi why would you want to swap it? Is it fried? are your gears 2.73's?

I've never heard of anyone on this board swapping gears in their garage without a problem.

Probably, can't remember the exact year they changed over, do a search on the general tech board and you should find an answer.

I'd say a synthetic lube approved for limited slip differentials.

i'm pretty sure that 89 was the first year of 28 spline axles in the 10 bolt rear axles. i'm not sure about the bw 9 bolts, though. anyone else want to shed some more light on this?
the reason i would just swap it is because if it is a posi then i want it in my 88 not the 86. the 86 is gonna be nothing but drag so i will just run a spool in it. but thank you everyone iam just going to have to crack it open and check.

doing my gears was pretty easy in my opinion, it just took some time. What I did was remove the axel and mount it between 2 sawhorses so I could work on it. I did not think working on it with my hands above my head gear lube running down my arm.
