Can anyone tell me how many cars had the charcoal cross lace wheels, all years/models? Trying to hunt down a factory 16" set..but I haven't even seen any yet! Just a ton of goldies..

 

From what I've read I haven't seen anything to indicate charcoal gray was used on the crosslace wheels before 91, and only then on the Trans Am. Also gold was an optional color for the trans Am so not all T/As had charcoal. Earlier T/A may have been available with charcoal wheels but I'm not sure. Keep in mind all the GTA's used gold wheels. I've gound 3 sets so far, they were on a 91 T/A, a trashed 88 Iroc, and another 91 Trans Am... not real common wheels.

 

Colors other than gold will be harder to find than gold ones. Seems like black is fairly common, white, silver, and the charcoal ones are kinda hard to find. The ones I have are silver, they came off of an 88 TA.

 

Don't forget RED... I've seen one set in person and another set in a picture... almost as bad as white paint with tan interior.

I don't own any, I've just found them and know where they are... Unfortunately I haven't found any 16's in the yards around here except 85-87 Iroc wheels, and when they show up they're about $650 a set... Check the classifieds when they come back up.

 

I bought a set of red GTA rims back in 94--they matched my Formula-it was Maui blue w/the red stripping-just like the pic above--but I then painted them black. When I bought my 86 T/A-it had a set of charcoal rims on it--but I don't know if they were stock--the rpo's were missing--as usual.

Hey Drew, these are on Stuart's 87TA. I'll bet they are original.

 

I believe that the charcoal wheels first appeared on the 86TA. Here is a copy of an RPO sticker for an 86TA. Code PW7-16X8 Aluminum Diamond spoke wheels. Code 84P - Wheel Color Gray.

 

I was under the impression that the Diamond Spokes did not appear till 87 with the introduction of the GTA, then the crosslaces was intorduced mid year 87 & replaced the 16" turbo rim. I many be wrong.

Yea, youre wrong. Dont worry, been there done that. They were introduced sometime late in the 86 model year.

And i also have set of charcoal off an 87 Trans Am caps have silver birds. and am hopefully purchasing another 87 TA that also has charcoal crosslase rims.

 

Does anyone know the proper color code of the charcoal wheels? And do they sell it in a spray can-thanks.

 

My 87 GTA rims do not have that little bullet shape wher the outer rim joins to the inner mesh .
Was that just on the GTA er what?

 

My 1991 TA came with them, I dont remember the exact RPO, but when I checked my RPO's I remember charcoal crosslace. Mine look just like the set pictured above. I have only seen two other sets in town, one gold and one black.....

Also, how do you guys get those things to shine so well, what are you using??????? I need to know!!!!!!!!

 

What are first edition or early GTA wheels? I think there was a change to them in '87? What is the difference?

 

The first edition (87 and older) does NOT have a dimple at each spoke end. 88 and newer rims have this dimple. GTA's ONLY came with gold centers, that was part of the package. Red ,Charcoal, silver, and white were all for regualr trans am's and some formulas(when optioned)

Wheel care...well i just take care of them from the start..the rims in my pic are dirty and factory clearcoat...if you want perfect strip and polish.

Colors...get the code out of the car with the rims or just go to your paint suppier and look at PPG catalogs anfd they uaually have the accent/stripes/interior/wheel paint chips and codes there. as fas as i know, nobody offers it ina spray can- check Eastwood.

 

I have a 86 model TA also with the WS6 package. It came with the charcoal cross lace wheels and 9 bolt rear

 

I think after 11 years they may have figured it out..
