Formula question
Formula question
I am more of fan of the Camaro than the Firebird, so please excuse my ignorance. Did all L98 Formulas get the "Formula 350" door decal, or did some get just the "Formula" decal? Was this something that changed from year to year, or was it consistant over the production run?
I'm asking because there was a picture posted here of a supposed 91 L98 CC1 Formula and it had the "Formula" door decals rather than the "Formula 350" decals. I always thought that the L98 cars had the "350" door decals.

This is often mis-understood, I have the parts & illustration books for 82-92 firebird & Trans Am.
What IROCTWENTYGR8 stated is correct. to add to what he stated:
The 87-90 Formula got the Formula 350 on the door and NO hood decal like the 5.0 cars.
so:
1987-1990:
350 TPI got "Formula 350" on doors (NO Hood decal)
305 TPI got "Formula" ONLY on doors "5.0 Liter F.I." on hood
305 LG4 & LO3 got "Formula" on the doors "5.0 Liter" on hood
BUT for 1991 & 1992, all of the door decals had ONLY Formula, and on the hood
350 TPI got "5.7 Liter F.I."
305 TPI got "5.0 Liter F.I."
305 TBI got "5.0 Liter"
There are some 87-90 cars that are running around with BOTH Formula 350 on the door and the 5.7 Liter F.I. on the hood, I hate to say it, but it is incorrect. The decals were added later by either a dealer or an owner.
hope that helps

While the door decals followed the format above, I disagree about the hood bulge badging. Ever looked at a 91-92 Formula 350's hood bulge up close? the 5.7 Liter FI script is in the same font as the 87-90 Door decals... Why would GM keep the old font if the hood decals didn't exist before 91? I've seen a couple all original 87-90 L98 Formula's with the 5.7 Liter FI script on the hood.

I guess the parts manuals could be wrong, its been known to happen before...
I have an 87 Formula 350. Door decals are Formula 350 and no hood decal. From everyone I have talked to, the above statements are correct. No hood decals for 87-90 and no door 350, but hood decals for 91-92's

Here are some pages from the firebird parts catalog. Here is how to use these pages (If it is not obvious)
1st column is the years used
2nd column is the car its used on and some of the option RPO's if applicable.
3rd column is the part number
4th column designates right or left (for our purposes)
5th column is not important at this time
6th column is the description of the part and sometimes more RPO codes, it also indicates the pages to look at in the illustration catalog.
hope this clears anything up.
