My '85 IROC was originally a radio delete car. My question has to do with the dash speakers. It looks like there is wiring going to the dash speaker location, but were there actually speakers in there? Someone installed a cassette player a long time ago, but I would like to return it to the radio delete look. The car has no convenience options either; it is the most base model vehicle I have ever owned. The window sticker backs up the radio delete, along with the unique sail panels (which are thankfully still intact). Thanks in advance!

What is under the dash pad of a radio delete car? Are there speakers in there anyway or a block off plate of some kind?

 

So you're saying the wiring is there for dash speakers, but there are no speakers? Or, what, somebody installed a cassette radio and speakers, so you're wondering if the wiring might be there because of that?

Does the car have, what appears to be, a factory antenna?

A "unique sail panel" is what, solid, no hole for a speaker?

Go through all of the U codes on the SPID label. The build sheet would be more specific to any provisions that might've come installed, if you're lucky enough to have found yours. It wasn't unusual in the earlier years for a dealer to get a car without a radio, because some people preferred to install aftermarket radios. But they still usually got the cars with all of the related provisions installed.

When I ordered my 83 Z28, I already had a top-of-the-line Delco EQ/Cassette radio that I'd installed in my 82 Z28 and planned to swap to the 83, so I ordered the 83 with the base stereo radio, rather than a radio delete, to make sure the car came with all of the wiring and speakers.

Interesting. Thanks, simo. My car does have an antenna in the passenger fender. I guess it makes sense, as I couldn’t imagine there would be different fenders made. The sail panels are uncut, and I have not removed them to see if her is any wiring there. He car had an aftermarket cassette player and speakers installed at some point, along with what I am guessing was a disc changer and amp (wiring was under the carpet), and an aftermarket alarm system.

I know the history of the car over the last 25 years or so, and this was all done before that. It is a super low optioned car; I’ve never seen another one like it. I’m pretty sure it was special ordered this way. It is an IROC, LB9, auto, T-top, AC car, with no convenience options except the roof console. It’s had later custom package seats and door panels installed, but I don’t care for the 85 base interior anyhow.

 

Here is a picture of the sail panels and the SPID label, in case anyone is interested. It’s also currently housing parts, so I apologize in advance for the mess.

 

The dash pad would have been designed with speaker grills, even for cars that don't have speakers. I don't know if there's any factory wiring in the dash as the wiring harness would also include the rear speakers. The wiring may be there. From the factory, there were no speakers in the dash, so a previous owner easily installed the dash speakers since the grilles are already in the dash pad. They didn't appear to install rear speakers as the area is still uncut.

You can remove the dash pad and remove any speakers that are in there, and reinstall the dash plate and call it a day!

i've never seen a car with no sail panels for speakers. pretty interesting.
