Hi I looked , to possibly BUY, at a 1996 Trans A VIN. 1G2FW87H1GL235698. VIN H indicates 305 4v. What can youse tell me about that.

Nice clean car, except a Knucklehead put what looks like a Goodwrench engine with a Holly carb and an Edelbrock intake. It has a functioning mechanical fuel pump on the right (passenger ) side of the block. All smog removed from the ENGINE. Cat , CHARCOAL Canister, maybe more is still in place

Seller is selling it for someone else, of course and doesn’t know much. Seller seems to,be a straight forward Car Guy and says in runs, poorly due to an intake manifold vacuum leak , ignition out of time and gasoline in the oil.










Looks like the H in the VIN indicates it was built with 305 4 barrel. What can youse tell me about that engine.
What would I need to get it to , GOOD GRIEF, pass SMOG. THANKS!

 

PS OP HERE. I saw an O2 sensor,with a cut , single wire on the left exhaust manifold. My Haynes Shop Manual indicates it was originally a “Feedback Rochester “ .

The body, interior, wheels are all very nice.

 

Came with the LG-4 305. Has a 350 in it now.
If you need to pass emissions, all that stuff will have to be put back on the car...

 

What makes you say it is a 350? The Valve cover decal says 305.

 

Because the GM Goodwrench engine is usually a 350. Only way to know for sure is check the numbers...

 

Back in the day I saw a few goodwrench 305s in these cars after they were beat into the ground. They were just replacement engines. There were 305s and 350s. The 305s usually said 305 on the valve cover. The 350s usually said 350. This was in the mid 90s. It's probably a 305. Either way I'd look and see if it still has an ecm and all the wiring for emissions. If not and it needs emissions I'd move on.

 

I would like to drive it for a year and sell it for a profit. With the wrong engine and no smog, it value is greatly hindered. Only DIY "Car Guy's" would buy it, and they want bargains. Real shame it got molested!

 

would like to get a complete, used engine, with feedback Rochester 4V, and all engine mounted , applicable for 1986, SMOG equipment. What other "Take out" , feedback Carb, Chevy engine would be a good replacement? Thinking a 350.

From what i see in the pics,looks like a really nice car-I think it would be decently easy to round up a proper CCC carb ,intake manifold,and emissions valves etc.then install that atop whatever engine is installed-this will be quite a bit easier if the ECM/CCC wiring is still there...For a daily cruiser,I think a TBI truck 350 or upgrade L98 with properly set carb slapped on would do real decent and turn -key reliable I have a Goodwrench 305 in my spare engine stash: 1987,made in Canada,twin dipstick.

 

Anyone care to opine what I should offer $ ?

 

Have a good look under,and if clean of rust or accident damage,I think $5500 would be a fair offer. Seat fabric might be fragile if they have seen too much sun. Just about any 3rd gen engine problem is an easy fix
