History / OriginalityGot a question about 1982-1992 Camaro or Firebird history? Have a question about original parts, options, RPO codes, when something was available, or how to document your car? Those questions, answers, and much more!
Not sure if this is the right forum for this or not. Many years ago, I purchased a rear disc brake axle for my 83 Camaro. I wanted to replace the drum brake rear axle. If found one on eBay and won the auction. While the axle has been installed for several years, I recently came across the stamping on the tube. The stamping is 5PH C194 2. I never had the RPO codes from the donor car. The part was parted out and the shell sent to the scrap yard before I bought the rear axle. The gentleman I purchased it from thought is was from as GTA, but he wasn't sure since he had numerous parts from various cars.
I was looking around the net, but could not find anything regarding the stamping on the tube. I have already pulled the rear cover and got the gear ratio. But I was just curious to see if I could find out any more information on this rear axle. I will post a picture of the tube stamping
and the pumpkin casting number. There was no tag on the axle when I purchased it. Any information beyond what I have would be awesome to know. Thanking in advance
The pumpkin casting # just tells you that it's a 7½" 10-bolt with the F body torque arm mount. No particularly useful information in it.
Somebody posted a list of those stamping codes on the Drivetrain forum once. Might be able to find yours among them.
OTOH, all they'll tell you, is the gear ratio. Butt you can already SEE that youself: just count the teeth on them. In fact the tooth count might already be on them, that you can just read; will look something like 15:41, which would be 2.73 (41 ÷ 15 = 2.7333333333333...) Then you can just look at the carrier and see if it's a posi or not. If all that's inside it is 4 little gears and a shaft, it's not posi; if you see springs and plates, it is. From as little as can be seen in the photo it looks like it's not, butt closer inspection may reveal otherwise. That's all the RPO codes or the stampings would ever tell you anyway.
