How do you know when the hatch pull down unit goes bad. Why does it go bad in the first place? Is it similar to 3 pegs that go bad in the headlight motors?

It has a plastic gear that gets striped out. it dosent allow the hatch to close all the way and dosent allighn up with the side fins
