Lightweight carpet

Where is the best place to get lightweight carpet and how much less does it actually weigh? (Is it worth it?)

Also, related to weight, but not carpet, I posted a thread with some questions about wheel weight and "will this work?" type things in the Organized Drag Race forum here on TGO. If anybody in the know about wheels gets a chance to check that out, I would appreciate it.

Thanks

a long time ago when i was building my Vega and Maxi-Van
i went to a local carpet store and bought what the sales guy told me was "car carpet"
was super cheap, and very very nice
it was also very light and very flexiable too
and of course black

it was very easy to countor to fit

if you want something real light LOL. look at that indoor outdoor green stuff
green would look tackey, but it would be light

most carpets are light, it's the sound deadners that add wieght

ACC makes really nice replacement carpets...it doesn't have the rubber backing that the factory does and it's considerably lighter (like 50lbs. or so). this is what i have in my car.

i want to say you can get it through Hawks Thirdgen parts at the top of the page here...we bought ours through thirdgenparts.com...now fbody motorsports, and no-one on this site is anywhere near supportive of those guys anymore...but i've had good luck with them so far.

Re: Lightweight carpet

The factory carpet IS amazingly heavy. I just replaced mine with sime ACC Deluxe version carpet and it was less than half the weight. The old carpet is so heavy it is actually very hard to try and bundle up and lift yourself- its so stiff and awkward. I didn't weigh it but I would guess the new carpet PLUS the Dynamat sound deadener I put in where still as equal or lighter weight than just the original carpet. I never expected it to weigh that much.

Re: Lightweight carpet

I think you would be shocked at how much weight dynomat adds to a car. I have two 40lb rolls of the stuff in my car so added 80lbs to it, the stock carpet isnt even close to 80lbs.

I just went out and grabbed the 3 extra sheets I have any they weight 5 lbs.

I originally bought 2 packs (9 sheets par pack/ 36sq ft per pack) and I used 15 of those 18 sheets in the car (I lined the entire cargo compartment and the roof also with two sheets up there)
SOO.. 5lbs per 3 sheets x 15 sheets used (so times by 5)= 25lbs added of Dyanmat- Not 80 lbs.
Sorry, your facts are wrong on the Dynamat useage needs and weight to fill an F-body chassis.-I also had I woulds guess almost one full sheet of cut off waste so it is even less than the 25lb figure. the box is heavy feeling(MAYBE 16-18LBS TOTAL PACKAGE WEIGHT), but not 40 lbs each- they were shipped to me standard shipping and handling fee from Summit racing and if they were so heavy and bulky they would add a shipping surcharge.

Re: Lightweight carpet

an optima commercial battery is 38lbs... if one roll of dynomat was that much it would be insane.

i used the dynomat extreme which was very light myself.

anyhow regardless also look into dorset/asc carpet, their 800 line which is similar to what acc deluxe is decently priced and lighter then factory.

both acc and acs/dorsett offer heavier matt backing if you wanted more sound insulation like factory. if your worried about sound enough to run dynomat you should pay the extra $60 and get the carpet with the matt backing as it adds even more sound dedening obviously.

check with rockauto... they are just one of several places to get a good price on carpet for our cars.

Re: Lightweight carpet

I bought mine at wal mart. Auto zone, advance auto, pep boys, etc all sells it.

In rolls 36''x 72'' Price was $8 a roll + tax at wal mart. It's thin speaker box type carpet.

I'm not on my home PC and I can't remember for sure the weight of the carpet but I can check and post it when I get home sunday night. I think it was like 3 lbs a roll and I needed 3 rolls to do the whole interior
