can you spraypaint a seat?

I picked up a set of 95 leather camaro seats for my 92rs for $100. Problem is they are tan and my interior is red. I have seat covers on the current seats but they are in bad shape. An upholstery shop in town will do a custom real leather job for $900, but I am in the process of sinking 5 grand into the engine so it will be a while til I can pony up the cash. I will change the leather anyway so I'm not worried about ruining it.

Is there any sort of spray paint or dye that can be sprayed on without bleeding onto clothes. I don't need it to look perfect but I don't want it to look too cheesy. I'm looking for black and maybe red too.

Eh, I did that to a Chevette once, (I was 17) with a vinyl dye in a can. It didn't come off on my clothes, I hat to touch it up once or twice, but it did stick. I don't remember who made it though, and it wasn't leather...

Try something like this: SEM Aerosol Vinyl Dye

Oh, and that's no indication that I recommend you actually doing this to perfectly good leather seats. But, if you must... Try that.

I wouldent do it if i was you. If you are going to recover them later anyways why not buy some new seat covers. They have some realy nice ones for 25 or so. Look around.

thanks guys. I didn't want to do anything stupid, thats why I consulted you first. I didn't want to get seat covers because, well, they look like seat covers. Do they have any nice ones that you guys have tried and would recomend? I could do about $100 or so if I had to but would rather spend about 50.

that sem vinyl dye looks like it might work though. The car is not a daily driver only about 20 miles a week.

thanks again

I picked them up from Homes Depot for $19.99 a pop, they went with my color theme and are protecting my seats.

They look so 80's (kind of like a red interior)........wait thats really the only way to go with these cars...... nice I like it.

Have to see if they would match my red interior

You could look for another set of leather seats in your color and sell the ones you have. Anything over trying to dye perfectly good leather.

the only reason I got the tan was because everywhere I looked wanted 3 to 8 times the price for black or grey (red is hard to find because I guess people think it is cheesy.) The perfectly good tan leather will be ripped off the seat anyway when I have them redone.

I do understand what you guys are saying though. There is no quality way to correctly do it. I won't do it unless someone can convince me otherwise, and that doesn't look like its going to happen.

Thanks for the opinions

ya, black interior pieces are always hard to find. Kills those of us that are switching from another color to black.

I'm in a similair situation you are in, since I'm looking for new seats and the cost of black ones are really high. I dunno how much it will cost to get the old ones reupholstered though.

ayar inc will make them for you for about $800-$1000 depending on what you want (leather/vinyl). They send them to you and you put them on with hog rings. I have spoken to the owner personally several times. Their customer service is awesome. He swears someone who has never done it can do the job in one good afternoon and he will send me a video. When new cars come from the factory, only the seating area is real leather. I have also checked custon soft trim's website. They tell you their closest certified dealer and mine said $850 for the entire job installed but they are an our away and I have to leave them my car for two days. I just don't want to get that much funds tied up until my engine is in.

tan seats can't look that bad in there. I would just change all the compliment pieces to black. Put black carpet in there, black door panels and paint you interior trim black, it would look kickass with the tan.

Well, you can try...

But leather has natural oils that will resist paint from adhering to it.

I have heard of a few companies that make seat covers that you can do yourself. If you plan on keeping the car - I suggest something like that.

Good luck!
