The best is to take them right out of the car, spray them with cleaner front and back, hose them off, then blow dry them. After that, a thin application of your favorite protectant, then wipe off the excess to give a natural appearance.
If you don't feel like taking them out of the car, a set of detailing brushes can help you get most of the visible surfaces clean.

No, you could take the dashboard out of the car for access too.

A smoker was the previous owner of my other car, the daily beater, and when I put the heat or AC on it stinks like stale wet ash all the time. It is stomach turning, I too would like to clean my ducts in that car but just dont want to take the time to do it on a POS car. I understand where he is coming from.
