First, remove the 4 tork screws holding the radio/HVAC trim plate. Then you will see 3 screws holding the HVAC. Remove them. Then unplug the fan switch connector on the left side of the HVAC. Then unplug the cluster of vacumn tubes going to the vacumn actuator valve. To get the tubes off you must remove 2 round slip-on type clips holding the tubes to the acutuator. This can be done by prying with a screwdriver. Then you must remove the thermostat cable. There is a push in style clip that holds the cable end to the HVAC. It can be accessed from the top side of the HVAC. Squeeze it and the cable mount pulls out from the bottom of the HVAC. Then you can turn the HVAC and pull out the cable end. I may not give the best directions but I hope this helps. Badman

Just noticed you have a firebird. My directions may only apply to a Camaro.Badman

same thing as a camaro, you got a few connectors, some vac lines with metal rivets. Then you have a button on the top of the controls that you need to slide to the side and pull the lever cable out. All very simple once your looking at it.
