any basic wtr style grease should work.

Thanks for the quick reply.
I'm assuming WTR = wide temp range.
Can you explain the procedure to follow to lube the cable? Do I pull the centerpiece (not sure of it's name) out?
Thanks

centerpiece as in gauge cluster? if so, that may be the easiest way. however since you have to reach up and under the dash to get to disconnect the speedo cable, you just may be able to lubricate it w/o pulling the cluster. just need a screwdriver to apply a little leverage to the retaining clip and it should pop off. i've have about 4 different clusters in my car and have removed them maybe 3x as much.

I'm sorry I should have made myself more clear. I've taken the cluster out a couple of times and I've got that covered. I'm wondering the best way to get the grease inside the speedometer cable housing? Do I need to pull the center driving flexible shaft part way out of it's housing or just how do I lube the speedometer cable itself?
Thanks again

i'm not sure if I'd try and pull the inner cable out, haven't messed with it before to offer correct advise on that one.
I'd think a popsicle stick or something a little thinner than a finger would suffice to get it all in there.
you have any graphite around? I used a small little squeeze tube to fix a stubborn lock one time, that may work even better than grease...

Yank the cable from its housing. Unscrew the housing from the tranny and shoot brake clean or some other cleaner down the housing until the fluid is clear. Button back up. Clean the cable itself, then put a dab of Napa's Sil-Glyde (mentions speedo lube on the tube) in your palm and run the cable through it as you thread the cable back into the housing. You'll probably have to manipulate the cable a bit to reseat it in the speedo sleeve.
