air bag question
I recently bought a 91 firebird, great car but has a problem with the steering wheel. The air bag hasn't been deployed, but the steering wheel is split open from age, and i can see the airbag. small split, but i'm afraid it wont pass inspection. can i put a different wheel on? and if so how do i remove steering wheel with an airbag inside? any help would be app. thanks.

This is a very common problem with third gens. The airbag slowly peels out of the steering wheel, but im not sure how to answer the other questions, just letting you know I have the same problem. :l

I had to have a new ignition key made a few months back. The locksmith had to remove the airbag prior to removing the wheel. First the battery needs to be disconnected (locksmith says for 1/2 hour for safety), then there are 4 torx head screws on the back side of the wheel that need to come out. Once the screws are out, the airbag should come out so it can be disconnected. Should be the same for the Birds as the Camaros.
If you remove the airbag or change the wheel over to one without an airbag the car wont pass inspection anyway. But if you decide the bag has to go then just to be safe, after you disconnect the neg battery cable, take out the 10 SIR fuse in the fuse block. I would do it just for extra precaution so as I dont end up eating an airbag.

This is the proper procedure for removing the airbag:
*DISCONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE*
1. Turn the steering wheel to align the wheels in the straight-ahead position.
2. Turn the ignition to the LOCK position.
3. Remove the SIR air bag fuse from the fuse block.
4. Remove the left side trim panel and disconnect the yellow 2-way SIR harness wire connector at the base of the steering column.
5. Loosen the TORX screws and locknuts from the back of the steering wheel, untill the inflator module can be released from the steering wheel..
6. Remove the inflator module from the steering wheel.
KEEP IT POINTED AWAY FROM YOU AT ALL TIMES.
PLACE THE AIR BAG FACE UP IN A SAFE PLACE WITH PLENTY OF ROOM.
IT CAN STILL GO OFF ACCIDENTALY.
