gas gage stuck
Hey folks,
Hey I got a Gas gage which gets stuck in the middle, Like it goes from full to half fool and just stays there, any tips? should I be taking my dash board out
(I have a parts car). Or should I be looking into the gas tank?
----------
Opps forgot, its a 92 V6 Firebird RS.

Classic bad GM sending unit float symptoms...your problem lies in the tank. Every GM car I have ever owned has done this. Either the plastic gears get stripped and it stays way past the mark, or the gears get gummed up and it sits somewhere in the middle.

Re: gas gage stuck
Well, I replaced the gauge cluster in my car yesterday, and I yanked it out today to replace the fuel and voltage gauge. I've done gauge swaping in couple of third gens and to tell you the truth, every damn gauge that I used had a mind of its own. The common problem I found with the gas gauge is that the screws in the back (that hold the gauge in as well as provide contact for the gauge itself) tend to get a bit loose throughout the years. We are talking loose enough to where a "strategically placed" bump would create "ghost" problems many people exprience.
I've seen gauges drop as much as quarter of a tank when I was braking. I saw them stay in one place for a while, and than go low like you just wasted a bunch of gas. Both of these were caused by the screwes being loose (just loose enough). Its worth a shot.
If your gauge used to work and now it started doing this I would check the back of the cluster. Its also good maintenance thing to do. Take the cluster out and tighten the screws and the bulbs.
I've got that down to a science. It takes me 15min. to take out the firerbird cluster out the right way. To change gauges it takes no more than 5 minutes. It really should be no probelm for you to check this. If you wanna know more shoot me a PM and I can explain it in detail. That way you don't brake any parts.
Hope the problem is simple.

Re: gas gage stuck
yea mine is stuck too but I have a camaro, which is totally different from the birds. I have to check everything because the gauge works, but it pins itself to past full. I can take the cluster pieces off, and move the needle down but the power pushes itself back up. My dad (the mechanic) says it is prolly grounded out somewhere, but i have a feeling its in the tank...any one have an answer?
