92 Cluster in a 86?

is there anyway possible to put a cluster from a 92 z28 into say an 86 irocZ??? since the 145 MPH cluster is soo hard to come by and i have a 92 cluster would it slide right in? or would it not work? my current speedo stopped moving. could it be just the cable???? speed sensor??? it worked for a little while i think the gear that is behind the actual guage is worn out and doesnt spin anymore.. anyone tried to do this or have done this?

If you swap the entire dash from 92 to 86.

No. Aside from fitment issues, the 92 is electric, your 86 mechanical.

my current speedo stopped moving. could it be just the cable?

Yes.

Re: 92 Cluster in a 86?

it is possible with a lot of work to fit the cluster in using the old dash. i know some one who did. I think his screen name here is something like 84zz4.
I did it the easy way and just swapped the whole dash.
As for the elctric thing, that's not a big deal. Just use a VSS from an electric speedo car, send it into a TBI buffer box, one goes to the speedometer, one to the ECM.

Just swap out the entire dash, it's much easier then trying to fit the newer style cluster into the older style dash.

I did the dash swap last summer, and it's pretty easy. Just get a dash that has the C-100 harness intact. Then get the schematics for both years, and if any pins on the C-100 need to be moved, just move them to match your 86 harness.
