4th gen console woes

so sunday i got it in my head that it was going to be the day i would install my 4th gen console in my 87 formula..... after about 4 hours of work i was able to get the console in and it looks great but i pounded the tranny tunnel down too far and now the tranny is hitting under acceleration.... oh, the vibration....

so now i will need to get under the car and pound the tranny tunnel back up...

**please keep in mind if you are going to do this DO NOT pound the tunnel down too far**

Pound the tunnel? I didn't have to pound down the tunnel when I installed my 4th Gen center console...

Same here. I'd trim the console before I pounded my tunnel down.

i bet you didn't install the AUTO top plate.... i installed the auto.. there is NO way in the world you can get it to fit unless you move the shifter down about 2 inches....

and you can't trim the console to get it to fit.. if you trim it you will only make it sit LOWER and then you would have to move the shifter down even more!

EDIT: i see you DID install the auto but you had to hack up your radio pod...... mine is installed with the radio pod in tact... once i get under the car and pound the tunnel back up a bit it won't hit and everything will be fine.

Re: 4th gen console woes

I agree that auto shifter plate is a bitch to install. I had to trim some of the plastic tabs under the shifter plate itself. I also decided to lift the center console about an inch to fit correctly. Let us know how it turns out. I would be interesting to have a flush auto plate. I have to fabricate some sort of radio pod since I did destroy the last. I also plan to get a z-gate shifter, so that should be fun

I tried it with my original 3rd gen shifter in place but figured it wouldn't work. I went back to the junk yard and got the 4th gen shifter and had to remove the spot-welded piece that the 3rd gen shifter bolted to and drill new holes. Worked like it was ment to be, but now that 3rd and 4th are gone it is time to install my t56. By the way I used a 97 dash and console, if that makes a difference. Lastly does anybody got the upper portion off a six speed console and looking for an auto upper (not tring to hijack your tread dude)?
