Re: firebird dash in a camaro?

not quite.

the brackets to attach the dash to the car are different. i am sure somthing could be done, but you might have to cut the brackets out of a junkyard bird and weld them into your camaro. worth it? hell yes.

what is the same is the way the steering column and dash connect together, and that is some of your strength there. i also know there will be no problem physically making it fit. one thing to keep in mind however is that you will also need to switch all the vent ducting, perhaps even the entire heater box.

as far as the speedometer goes:
firebird switched to VSS in 1986. so if you have a VSS camaro (no cable for speedo, i think this is 90-92) you can use an 86+ firebird dash. if you have a cable you must use atleast the gauge cluster from a pre86 firebird. or convert to VSS.

good luck with your project. i can not wait to see the end result. if i ever own a Camaro i know i will do the same thing. i HATE the Camaro dash.

Re: firebird dash in a camaro?

I hate to be the one to say this, but if you hate the Camaro dash, why not just get a Firebird instead of a Camaro?

Re: firebird dash in a camaro?

perhaps he hates the outsides of the Firebird (cant imagine why anyone would prefer Camaro over Firebird, but i am sure many of you Camaro guys feel the same way about the Camaro)

or perhaps he does not have the money to buy another car. or perhaps he just wants to do something different. i would like to own a Camaro some day, but if i ever do it WILL get a Firebird dash. even if i am the first person to ever do it.

Ask the junk yard if they'll cut it for you. Some times they'll cut things off. Just tell them you need the brackets for your car because you're trying to fix something a previous owner did. Just make sure you don't drive the Camaro to the junk yard that day. Most junk yards I've found are accomodating if you ask.

Re: firebird dash in a camaro?

you could actually get away with a cordless drill. you just need to drill some spot welds. that said, the one time i removed camaro dash mounts i used a sawzall. despite owning a firebird i do not know what the mounts look like, but i assume the mounts are attached in the same way.

Re: firebird dash in a camaro?

in my 84 T/A, i've had 3 firebird dashes in it... the original, an 88 and a 91. There are differences in the bottom 2 mounts (near the kick panels) over the years, but the upper firewall mounts are the same. I've disassembled a camaro and the upper mounts all looked the same as those in firebirds. The bottom mounts from year to year aren't very different at all, easy to modify/bend.

I'm also using a diverter box from a camaro, and it's the same. The vents from the diverter box to the actual openings are dash specific, but the box is the same for camaro and firebird.

That's a matter of opinion, and better left to yourself. It served no purpose to post what you did.

I think my GTA dash looks WAY better than my Camaros ever did.....again....MY OPINION.

Can't back up either one of your opinions, but the Firebird digital dashs are the ****.

Re: firebird dash in a camaro?

it would probably be easier to do a camaro front clip swap onto a firebird with said dash

Re: firebird dash in a camaro?

I didn't do mine but I bought it like it. I think it looks pretty good. The speedometer was broken so I ended up putting a monster speedo in it.
