Making new seats from scratch

I looking to change the appearance of my seats. I am trying to save myself as much money as possible and don't mind spending extra time. I was thinking I could buy a pleather or cheap material from a rag shop to use to replace the original beat up seat fabrics. These would be made from scratch. Is this difficult to do has anyone ever tried it? My mother can help me stitch the fabric together but how would it to mold to the seat? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Andrew

Re: Making new seats from scratch

I have never made seat covers personally, but i have done some other interior work such as door panels and kick panels (not nearly as difficult as seats would be). I can only suggest that when you take the old covers off try to take them off in one piece so you can use them as a template and also buy a lot of extra fabric because it is going to take a few attempts to get it right. Good luck with the seats, keep us posted on your progress.

Re: Making new seats from scratch

Thanks I'll def have to remember that but now I need to know how the stitching can be done if anyone can help me with that? Before I take the seat apart I would like to know is the fabric sowed right into the cushion and how can I do that if it is? Mom says her needle and machine would break if I used it with that fabric.

Thanks
Andrew

Re: Making new seats from scratch

I don't think the fabric is sewn into the cushion, but I'm sure its greatly/heavily attached to it and it its not going to come out without a fight. I've actually thought of doing the same thing. My seats are a bit more complicated since I have seats from a Dodge Conquest, but what I plan to do is make a cover that closely resembles the current cover, then lay it over and stitch the cover I made to the seat cover already there, sounds a bit confusing, but I think it would look better, and be easier than trying to replace them...

Re: Making new seats from scratch

I got ya. What fabric do you plan on using? That doesn't seem like a bad idea but I think I'd rather replace it. Think the fabric is glued to the cushion? How could i make it air tight?

Thanks

Re: Making new seats from scratch

What if you just cut the different sections of the seat out. When I say sections I mean the solid pieces of fabric without any stitches. Then, with new fabric, you could trace out the shapes and cut them out. You could just sew the pieces together and get the right shape for the seat. I don't know how well that would work, (if at all) but it's an idea.

That would work, it is a good way to start but nobody has tried this before?
