Overhead Console

Hello, I am thinking about getting an overhead console for my Camaro and want to know what you guys think of them first as far as if they are a good addition or bad. What kind of benefits/problems do they have? What are the two cylinder pieces in the front of it with numbers and such on them?

Let me know what you think, thanks.

Re: Overhead Console

I personaly like the looks of them. I started to customize 1 for my car till I took my interior in a different direction. The dial things never worked right in mine, so I took it all apart and fiberglassed over the valley and made it 1 smooth piece. I'll post a pic if you want, it is unfinishd, but you'll get the general idea. Also when you pull yours remember it only screws in from light and slides forward on, if I remember right, 4 peg like screws. Don't forget to get the peg like screws.

Piece of cheap junk that has no real functional purpose--at least not any that you can't live without. That said, I have one. I like the cool factor (some may think 'cool' is overstated). The following link provides install info:

Re: Overhead Console

I added one to one of my thirdgens a long time ago for the "cool" factor. I got it free at a junkyard. My last car had one too... the current car doesn't and I have no plans to add one since all in all they are goofy and utterly useless. You can't put anything in the pocket since it slides out

The dials have different things on them, like appointment, date, service something like that I forget what specifically they say, and you can put the date in on the other one. I used it for oil change reminders on the first car.
The last car had my friends fiancee birthdate in it since I bought the car from him, and never bothered to change it. Funny thing was his finacee bought it back for him as a birthday present when I bought my current car.

Oh yeah and like 99.9% of them have the flashlight missing. lol I never even knew they had them and wondered WTF that weird opening was supposed to be for until I started coming here.

Overhead Console Looking for Part

My 87 IROC came with a factory European Package center overhead console and someone liked the Dome Light Cover better than me. I have searched high and low and can't find the right cover for my car. Prefer new because of car shows. Does anyone have any ideas?

Looks the same as all versions I've ever seen. Since the dome light cover has been long discontinued, you won't find a new one (unless, of course, you stumble on a NOS one somewhere). I have one which is an 8 out of 10 and unyellowed. PM me should you be interested.

Yes, it is the same as most for center console. I still don't know why it was referred to as European though.

My pocket looked like that too. So, I tore it out, and made a cover for it, that is pretty close to the gold on my GTA.

Thanks for all the info so far guys. Just one more thing I don't know about them, what are those two rows of numbers or letters on the front of the console?

Re: Overhead Console

I really liked the way it looked when I first got it and installed it in my Formula, As I had always wanted to put one in my first car an 83 Trans Am.

But now I am going to redo my headliner and leave it out. Along with deleting the sunvisors for a cleaner look.

Re: Overhead Console

Yes, the numbers are totally useless. I have found even the equipped flashlight isn't enough to find your way out of the car if it is totally dark. About the only thing that I have found any use for is the map light and the pocket.. Some people prefer to leave it in, Some don't..
