Cluster question...

Hi everyone, I'm new here and hope this is the right place for this question..

I bought my baby a few months ago and am now looking to start changes after reading some of the stuff on here, you guys have excellent info!!

I have an '84 camaro that unfortunately comes with the wonderful dual needle instrumentation... um, no. I would like to change this to a different speedo and clustering if possible...i really like the 145 speedometer but i would settle for the 115 if necessary...my main question is basically can i swap the whole cluster out, or do i need to do it piece by piece? i would like to just put the whole cluster out of a later third gen if possible, can anyone point me in the right direction on this?

here are my specs, per vin check
Year: 1984 Style/Body: Coupe 2D Make: Chevrolet Engine: 5.0L V8 4BBL Model: Camaro Base /Z28 Country of Assembly: United States
it is the coupe, not the z28 model....

btw, i know my brake light is on...

Re: Cluster question...

You can swap in an 85, 110, or 140 from a cable-driven Camaro up to 89. I'd suggest simply swapping in a newer speedo head into your cluster; occasional electronic problems crop up otherwise. If you're interested in a 140, I have one with a working trip odometer (though the speedo itself jumps two or three miles per hour over 70). If you're interested, please PM me.

Re: Cluster question...

I have an 89 IROC with a speedo of 115 which sucks! JamesC, you said that changing out the WHOLE cluster could possibly bring up electronic problems, how so? Can I just replace the speedo gauge and be done with it, or is there recalibration that needs to be done by either computer or tensioning?

I've sold several clusters where various electronics problems cropped up after the swap. It seems easier, if you know your original cluster functions as it was designed, to swap the new speedo head into your old cluster, thus eliminating potential problems. Aside from the swap, no other calibration is required. You might take a peek at my trip odometer fix in the FAQ section (as about 90 percent of them are broken):

Re: Cluster question...

All I can find is clusters. Can I buy the cluster and take out the speedo and put it in? The reason I'm so concerned with it, is that I've read a lot about people who have changed the entire cluster and the new one doesn't work, so then they put the old one back in, and now that one doesn't work. So I'm just trying to get it right the FIRST time and not have problems. Thanks for the info above!

Yes, that's what I'm suggesting.
