Speedo squeaks?

I'm having two bad squeaks in my car, the first one seems to be coming from the speedometer. The needle isn't steady and shakes back and forth and makes a hideous squealing noise, what can I do to fix that?

The second seems to be coming from behind the passenger backseat, it may be the hydraulic arm for the trunk on that side, any ideas?

Mentioning the type and year of your car would be useful.

Haha, good call. It's a 1989 Iroc-z with a 350.

Re: Speedo squeaks?

You will have a mechanically driven speedo head. I'd try cleaning and lubricating the cable before I suspected the head itself. With the cluster removed, pull the cable from its housing. Unscrew the housing from the tranny and shoot brake clean or some other cleaner down the housing until the fluid is clear. Brake clean will dry rapidly. Button up at the tranny. Clean the cable itself, then put a glob of Napa's Sil-Glyde (mentions speedo lube on the tube) in your palm and run the cable through it as you thread the cable back into the housing. You'll probably have to manipulate the cable a bit to reseat it in the speedo sleeve at the tranny end.

For more info about the cluster removal and the trip odometer repair, check the following link:
