Claustrophobic rear seating.

I hate sitting in the rear passenger seats, and so do alot of friends I've had in the car. The lack of a window to your left or right is probably the culprit, along with the low headspace.

Anyone ever get this feeling or response from backseat passengers??

Re: Claustrophobic rear seating.

Of course. The back seat is no place for an adult to be. They are semi useful for kids, and not really anybody else.

isn't the back seat in these cars just for show? i don't think i would make anyone sit back there. i would have taken my seats out if they didn't look good there

people never sit in my back seat. my trunk is filled with a sub box so when i transport anything it goes on the back seat (ie backpack etc)

I always thought it was supposed to look cool as well. I mean all it really does is provide adequate space to lay the front seats back to... well, use them as the back seat is usually intended

Re: Claustrophobic rear seating.

Someone sitting in the right rear seat isn't too bad. The person sitting in the front pass. seat just has to scoot forward a little bit. I however am fairly tall (6'1") so I usually don't let people sit behind me. I have to scoot forward and chew the wheel, which is very uncomfortable. Not to mention, if you have the t-tops off, the people in the rear seat get douched with air at 60mph.

Re: Claustrophobic rear seating.

The big thing with the back seats is the F-Body being a sport coupe.Since Chevrolet didn't want infringement on the Corvette's territory then(things have changed since the Vette has moved more uplevel). And insurance was an issue and continues to be for 2 seater cars. The back seats were always a selling point for them(inherited from the 1st Gens). And if you think 3rd Gens are cramped try and sit in the back seat of a 2nd Gen(especially one with the rear console). To me the only things that could be happy back there are groceries, luggage and perhaps small children and dogs.

Re: Claustrophobic rear seating.

I'm not sure how the insurance issue plays in, because generally a Corvette is less expensive to insure than an f-body.

I think that's because less dumb___es drive Corvettes. I made the mistake of letting my 16y/o brother drive my Camaro and discovered exactly why F-Body rates suck.

Not to discredit Camaro drivers as a whole, but insurance doesnt ask so much about condition of statistically wrecked cars... all that matters is the year, make, and model.

...its much easier for an idiot to get into a $500 Camaro and wrap it around a tree or kill themselves and others than it is in a Corvette.

Now is that for full coverage? or just the basic liability. I can understand liability being higher, but when you throw theft in there, doesn't it somewhat skyrocket? since it's not the 80's anymore, our cars aren't as often stolen. Just to be clear, I'm asking; not saying you're wrong. I don't know for sure, as I've never insured a corvette lol

Coolram - I hear you on the 2nd gen backseats. I sat in my buddies, dads '77 trans-am in the rear seats... nothing short of a miracle I could walk after that.

Re: Claustrophobic rear seating.

I have a couple of larger cars that have nice back seats but I like it when I get forced (or tricked) into driving anywhere. Show up in the Camaro and watch those smug lil pranksters faces contort as they realize that they have to rock paper scissor for that coveted front seat aside from that F*** those rear seats lmao

I concur. A Camaro is a sure fire way to get out of DD-ing fo sho. Rock paper scissors a front seat, where I come from its a little more saught after than that... I can definitly remmeber getting beat down with a wiffle ball bat over the front seat of a '86 T/A

The liability costs on a Corvette are substantially lower for the reasons that 5.0L to Freedom mentioned. The mean driver age for a Corvette is substantially older than that of Camaros. The safer driving habits of the Corvette owners outweighs the higher value of the Corvette. I only pay about $600/year with a $500 deductable for my 91 Corvette. In contrast, until I switched to classic car insurance, I was paying almost $400/year (per car) for liability only on my GTA and my IROC. I've heard numerous times on the Corvette Forum from owners that had a 4th gen and a similar year C5, and they all paid the same or less to insure the Corvette than their f-body.

If theft rates played a large role in insurance costs, Camrys would be one of the most expensive cars to insure, but as far as losses are concerned, accidents cost the insurance company way more money than thefts.

Re: Claustrophobic rear seating.

What seats? You mean that storage shelf behind the front seats?

I always joke that you couldn't fit a quadraplegic dwarf back there unless you turned him longways.

I had to eat my words when my 6'6 friend got stuck sitting back there (Talk about hilarious) because he only weighs around 170 lbs and me and my other friend are both in the 240 range... Sucks for him.

Fortunately, as the owner and driver, I'm glad I never have to worry about getting crammed back there, one of my high school buddies had a 5.0 Mustang GT hatch and I spent enough time collecting my dues in the back of that thing.

Re: Claustrophobic rear seating.

Only time ive ever had to ride in the backseat of anything like these was in ym freinds mustang.. But that was just because we gave a girl a ride home and thats just being an *** whole making her be in back... In the camaro i felt bad for my dad my mother and him when i first got it wanted to go for a ride... So he had my mom ride up front. At least he was behind her and could slide her seat way up because shes real short...

Re: Claustrophobic rear seating.

The only reason I've sat in my rear seats was to test how passengers might fit back there. Other than that, the only time I've spent back there was for working on something: speakers, shocks, etc.

They're pretty useless, and the car would look better without them, IMO, providing something was designed to fit and fill the space properly.

The seats in my Formula have been folded down for 20 years. I'd have removed them completely, but the interior looks better with them down, rather than out and having that strangely-looking empty space.

They're not even good for dogs! Mine hated it back there. The hump in the middle made it uncomfortable for her to stretch out.

But I'd always planned to remove the rear seats in favor of a properly-fabricated delete box if I ever got another thirdgen. But now I have another one, a 'vert that I bought this spring, and dang... the car actually looks good with the rear seats! As much as I hate them and want to be able to get rid of them, 'verts just look right with rear seats!

Oh my dog loves it. We've had her sense i was about 3 and im 17 now.. So about 14 years and Once i bought my truck i took her for rides every shot i got as well as with the camaro. Shes not doing to good anymore and shes going to be put down sometime this summer so im trying to give her every chance for a ride. If she hears me grab my keys she'll come running... Even when i got out to do some body work sometimes ill turn the radio on in the car and she'll go and climb into the back seat and get ready for a ride.

Re: Claustrophobic rear seating.

Mine just stay's folded down and i refer it as a two seater when it comes to people wanting to use it like i was a taxi.

Work's better as a shelf for getting stuff from point a to point b for me.

Alot better then the umm trunk if that's what they want to call that small hole in the back.

The rear seats do keep whay you might be carrying in the "luggage area" from getting in the front seats with you(unless you use the t-top tie downs to secure it).I've though abour keeping my '83's back seats folded down but it looks odd with the security shade in place.
