Slow down and take a deep breath..................Now put the shfter back in a low gear and you will see a small slit in the front. There is a U clip that holds it there.Use a small flathead screwdriver and pry it out.Takes 2 seconds

the shift ***** on the autos are press fit, after removing the button, spring and retainer from the top of the ****, they have what looks like a heavy duty staple on the front(side facing front of car), if the staple has already been removed(and probably lost long ago) you will just have two dots on the handle where the staple would go
other than that you just wiggle and yank on it really hard until it pops off

If you don't see the staple in the front of the shifter take the button off and make sure there isn't a snap ring inside. For some odd reason I remember one of my projects having one there.

Harrison5 is correct..............
It MAY be the held in place with the snap rings depending on the years
or if they ran out of/changed something while on the assembly line.
I have seen both.

Re: removing a 89 IROC shift ****
Does anyone know how to remove the shift **** on an '89 IROC manual transmission?
Kind of a stupid question, my apologies. I am very new to cars(I'm only 14).
