Update on leather interior kits

Some of you may remember a Steve Yoast producing some leather kits for 4th gens that cover virtually ever plastic piece inside the car. It gives the cars an expensive European look. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/inte...?highlight=kit

Well the update is that he has not made a 3rd gen SPECIFIC kit, but he HAS produced a universal kit with all the supplies needed to do the modification except for a heat gun. He asked that I post this up for you all to see. I plan on getting a kit for my Birthday this spring...at least I would like to anyway.

I think $180 is too much for the universal kit. you can get it cheaper at the upholstery supplier. $6 a yard for vinyl and $15 for contact glue.

Re: Update on leather interior kits

Having actually attempted this, I can tell you it's not an easy job. Especially on a thirdgen. Our panels have extra crease and turns that the 4th gen interior does not. There is alot more stretching and working the material then people think. Even the shop that did mine needed a lot of time to do it, and they know what they are doing.

Can you post some pictures of what yours looks like with the modifications done? And did you have the shop do all of the work?

Re: Update on leather interior kits

I had the place cover them all. I tried doing just the spare tire over and it turned out terrible. I ended up having to buy another spare tire cover because trying to get the material and glue off the original was impossible/ more work then it was worth.

Pics of the panels out of the car

Re: Update on leather interior kits

http://www.jaxseatcover.com/ did the work in Milwaukee, WI. Was around $550.

I can tell you it's hard to even find a place that will do it. I talked to 7 interior shops. Of those most said it was impossible, 1 qouted me $2500 to do it, and Jax who I went with.

Good luck. Finding these plastics not all beat up is getting tougher to do. I agree it's not for everyone though. It was a finishing touch for mine.

Re: Update on leather interior kits

how much of your interior did you do? I see you did everything to the back, what did you do for your door sills/kick plates up front?

Re: Update on leather interior kits

Maybe it's just the pictures, but your panels don't have the same fine-leather look like the ones Yoast did. Yours kinda look too "shiney"? Like they're just the plastic pieces with armor all on them. I don't know, they look a bit different than the ones Yoast did. Hmm...

Re: Update on leather interior kits

It's material from Katzkin. The grain probably doesn't show up as well in the pics. But at the same time as you can see from the pics, there is alot of bends and creases that are on those panels. If you look at the 4th gen panels that he covered, theres not as much of that to deal with.

Really nice Karps TA I'd rather pay for that, then a universal kit.

Re: Update on leather interior kits

I covered mine in all tweed, and yes it is ALOT of Labor (especially the T-top headliner), I did it over a few weeks at night, while the car was in storage for the winter.

Karps, That looks really nice!

Re: Update on leather interior kits

Thanks!

And for the record I'm not trying to rip on the interior kit offering. I just want people to know it's not just a spray some glue and put the material on job. It's alot more work then that, and takes alot of patience. And from my experiences on this board for years, people get pretty upset if mods aren't plug and play. Just trying to head off some potential complaining and save the guy offering them some potential hassels and badmouthing.

I understand completely. I don't think he can be badmouthed though because it's a do-it-yourself kit, and he clearly explains that. You can't justify knocking on someone's product just because you don't have the means to install it you know?

Anyways, I realize it is going to be a tough job, but like a few others here, my car isn't even considered a "backup car". It's simply a recreational vehicle, so I have no complaints about taking the interior out for a few weeks while I try my hand at this.

Re: Update on leather interior kits

Nope, I ended up spending all my money on an engine and transmission swap. Maybe some day I'll try it, but I have a lot of other projects I want to do first, like replacing all the weatherstripping, getting the sticky door locks fixed, and fixing the door hinge pins.
