Re: plastic headliner?..

I tried one. It did not fit. The pre-cut holes in the ABS for the sunvisor mounts were off by almost 3/4 of an inch making the sunvisors impossible to mount without hacking the ABS. It also does not mate well to the A pillar plastics. I was very unhappy and got a refund.

Re: plastic headliner?..

lol i kno what u mean, ive been looking for a t top headliner in decent re upholstering shape for a while now and i cant find one for a reasonable price, this way i figure i cud just spend the extra money on a plastic one and wont ever have to worry about it again, plus it complete my black interior which would be awesome!

Re: plastic headliner?..

They are also all over e-bay for about the same price through the e-bay stores. There is also available the whole kit which includes headliner, sail panels (speaker covers) and sun visors for $255 and shipping. Several colors available too. Haven't bought one yet, but seriously looking for my 89 as the backing board on it is crumbling and sagging.

Re: plastic headliner?..

ebay hasn't been good to me in the past.. but classic industries has the name backing it and the whole refund thing.. ebay jewed me with like 3 different sets of headlights.. all i want is the "euro" style housing for the high and low beams.. but all the one's on ebay were either crap and didn't work.. or my high beams were permently on.. or that dang rubber boot in the back prevented me from pluging it in.. lol, kinda off subject.. but reason why i don't use it anymore..

Re: plastic headliner?..

For a little more, you can get one from 1AAuto. I've heard good reviews from them, although I haven't dealt with them. The also sell on e-Bay, but seems you can go directly to their store.

Re: plastic headliner?..

As far as I know, the ABS headliner is a plastic base covered by a thin layer of foam and fabric. Painting that kind of material probably wouldn't come out that great, but the headliners come in all colors anyways. I have not tried one myself, but I am planning on purchasing one in the next month to complete my new interior

Re: plastic headliner?..

You can buy just the ABS board, or get one with fabric on it. Here is a link to the different packages: http://www.tpiparts.net/inc/searchre...liner&n=842846.
Those headliners should hold at speeds well over 70 MPH

Re: plastic headliner?..

pretty much this post just confused me lol..

so the plastic boards arn't even all plastic?..

i just don't want any kinda fabric up there anymore's why i liked it so much.. but right now it's just bare metal.. and it's not really a "clean" look for a freash painted car with everything all nice and shiney..

Re: plastic headliner?..

the plastic ones are plastic. You can get them with material and foam added or not.

I got one, I think from classic industries, although it didn't seem to be ABS, I could be wrong, it seemed tougher. It fit I would say a 8.5 out of 10. Everything fit great except on one side near the trim molding, it was too bulgy, and kind of sticks out slightly. The plastic there is slightly short so the molding doesn't hold it as tightly as it should I don't care becuase the material was a fresh pristine grey, and not that nasty old one that was on there. like 1000% better, so it was worth it.

you can get the original re-upholstered, but they are like a weird molded fiberglass, and on the t-top car, they get basically crudded up from water.

Re: plastic headliner?..

i bought one from classic industries. i dont like it at all. it doesnt fit right at all. it sags above the rear view mirror, and has about 1/2 inch gaps all around the ttops, goes too far down on one sail panel and is about 1" away from the other sail panel. i dunno if i got a poor mold or what but i dont like it.
----------
i bought the kit like another person was discribing, that was sail panels headliner and sun visors, i ordered flame red for my 1991 z28 which is what the RPO codes called for, headliner was the right color and sails and sunvisors were oxblood, which is way too dark. we had some flame red material so we recovered our own sail panels and sent the rest back. i was very disappointed.
----------
oh and my dome light had to be mounted backwards cause the hole that was there was backwards, poor craftsmanship

Re: plastic headliner?..

my stock one was unrepairable, and i was pressed for time to finish the car by G11 in atlanta so i just kept it. i want to get a stock one again and recover it. seems to be the best way to go....my ttops dont leak anyways so im not worried about the material

Re: plastic headliner?..

mine don't leak either, but i just don't like the cloth up there.. but i guess i'll buy the plastic one and if i have problems like you guy's i'll just go buy a cloth one and hope it works better.. i have a total of 3 headliners sitting in my closet right now, 1 i put together and it didn't come out as good as i thought it would, then again i used 3m anhesive and cloth from a local fabric store, and cut everything my self.. didn't come out bad i guess for my first try.. but the other 2 fiberboards arn't in the best of shape, and the 1 i put cloth on won't match wtih my 92, it was grey for my 86..

Re: plastic headliner?..

the one thing i hear alot about which one person on this thread saying is the sagging above the rear view. the reason it does this is the 2 clips that hold that area up arent avail on the ABS unit. if you can find a way to stick the clip to the ABS VERY firmly then you will be in good shape. measuring the placement is the easy part if (A) your ABS unit fits correctly to begin with and (B) if you can find another headliner to reference from.

me, i re coverd my own orig version and the weak spots, i just re enforced with newspaper and material glue. looks top notch and when the tops are off you cant see where its glued as the material goes deep down into the area under the roof line.

Re: plastic headliner?..

i'm most likely going to re-do mine this spring, b/c the one i have now had been leaked on, and since the material is nasty i can only imagine how bad that fiber board is going to be. I'm probably going to go with an ABS board from one of the sites u guys have mentioned, was thinking about that tpiparts.net one, but do u guys have any recommended ones to buy from? and what about that eckler's camaro parts magazine, i have one at home and if i recall correctly they have one in there as well. any help is much appreciated

It looks like its $10 more for a coverd one and $.01 less for an uncovered one there as apposed to tpiparts.net.

As far as I know, the only way to get the fabric for the sail panels from headliner sales companies is to get the kit that comes with the headliner, sail panels, and visors.

BMAN, go to your local fabric store/s and you can purchase the material there. get your headliner and as weird as its gonna be, take the headliner to the fabric store and match up with the headliner. OR if you can snip a large enough piece off the backside without messing up and of the edges take that snip and match it that way.
as i write this im thinking bout my sails and how they, my sun shades, and visors are all diff color than my headliner. i didnt like the way the first one came out so i re did another unit and the material was diff. im tempted to re-do my sails, visors, and Ttop sun shades.
if you need any help with re-doing your own i'll gladly give ya some tips i used.

question: Pontiac calls my interior medium grey.

All these sites say medium dark grey. Are they the same?

I just installed my abs headliner today in my 92 RS camaro hard top and it had the little sag by the rear view mirror and I just stuck some double sided 3M tape and boom it was done and looks great.

Re: plastic headliner?..

RPO's should prove that it's medium dark gray, thats what my 88 calls for. One question...i redid my headliner and it turned out like CRAP. I was contemplating getting the ABS headliner so that if i was to wrap it or get it wrapped in cloth then it would be easy to wrap the corners...but everyone seems to be not having a problem with the regular fiber headliner. What in the hell is the secret to the t-top corners?! My 84 headliner was crap, so i fiberglassed it and it came out alright, didn't lose it's shape, so i'm thinking about using that one for the re-do on my bird but i am deathly scared of doing those stupid corners for the t-tops cause i don't need to waste another $40 for glue and cloth. Sorry if i'm hijackin but curious also to see pics of ABS roof liner with or w/out cloth...as i've heard all the above complaints more than i've heard good.
