Steering column replacement?

How universal are the GM steering columns?

Mine ia waysloppy. Driving down the road, with the tilt locked in one spot, the steering wheel can be flopped up/down or side to side, a good 2", in all 4 directions. And my Hi/Low headlight selector (the turn signal lever) no longer selects Hi/Low, so I might as well replace the whole steering column.

My 87 is, of course, non VATS. Simply tilt, cruise, turns & wipers. Could I get one from ANY other car....say a truck/van/station wagon....to replace it? I could just swap the key cylinders, if I can't get a new column & the key that goes with it.

Another side benefit....by using an older steering column, I could do away with the steering lock. When did that start happening?

Re: Steering column replacement?

ok i did a swap my 1986 camaro to a 91 firebird steering column it worked great the only thing was different was the pigtail of the wiper control. so i would say 82 to 92 steering columns from firebird or camaro will work just lil modification and works like a charm. btw used the old steering wheel b/c i dont' want that gawdy airbag one.
