'88 GTA Digital Dash Question

My digital dash is all F**ked up. Speedometer is out of wak, can't read odometer, and cant get rid of the message board. also, it does not light up at night. When i got this car, the stereo was missing. Is this problem somehow connected to the stereo? If I were to install one, would it possibly fix itself? I have heard somewhere before that all the wiring somehow is all connected through the stereo...any suggestions?

Re: '88 GTA Digital Dash Question

I doubt hooking up a stereo would fix anything. The LCD panels are back lit just like any other gauge cluster, so it could be just the lights burned out, or the fuse. Do any of the interior lights work (with the headlights on), such as the HVAC back light, or shift indicator backlight (if it's an auto)? If they're all out, I'd check the fuse, otherwise the lights on the back of the cluster. Is the speedometer display garbled? If so, it may be bad.

Re: '88 GTA Digital Dash Question

Any updates on this? I have a digital dash in a TA that I am restoring and don't even know if it works. So anything you find out about yours may help me in the near future.

Thanks

Re: '88 GTA Digital Dash Question

i have an 88 gta with the digital dash, the wiring is in no way connected to the stereo, now if u have the steering wheel controls like I do then there is some stereo wiring going into the wheel. If you are having problems with the digital dash you may have a loose connection somewhere or a shorted out panel.

interior lights do work, and the only things that seems to work on the cluster is the RPM gauge. i had stereo controls, but replaced the whole steering column with one that has no stereo controls. wtf is garbled? if you mean that it is constantly changing (i.e. 28 to 34 to 22 to 45) than sure.

Re: '88 GTA Digital Dash Question

You could have something wrong with the VSS. I'm not sure if your car would have an electronic VSS though. In the Camaros, 82-89 are cable driven and 90-92 are electronic. If it is electric, you can hook up a Tech 1 (GM OBD1 Scan Tool) and read from the VSS and see if it matches what the speedo shows.

Re: '88 GTA Digital Dash Question

By garbled I mean just random segments displaying, not actually forming any numbers out of them, like this:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=qdULEgJT8kw

If it's at least showing numbers, it may just be the vehicle speed sensor.

yank that digital dash out,and replace it with an analog dash.
Thats what I did anyway.
Those things can be a major headache and very expensive to repair.
If you choose to do the swap I mentioned, let me be the first to warn you to get a complete int. harness from a non-digidash car.(Trust me!)
Take a look at my photobucket album, and you'll get an idea of whats involved.

Re: '88 GTA Digital Dash Question

thanks for the responses everyone...we had torn it apart and came across with multiple things...all the fuses are ok. Most of the bulbs were out for one...and it looks like that I need a new speedometer sensor which is why mine is going haywire. As for the odometer, still nothing yet, i have to dig a little deeper.

sorry i didn't respond sooner, a friend and I replaced quite a few things while we were at it. one of them being the heater core...that sucked...

wow, i don't have a problem quite like that...thankfully

Re: '88 GTA Digital Dash Question

from what i know a few years back when i was more involved with my car i remember that if a certain fuse burned out, the odometer would go dead AND the speedometer would read in kilometers only. now if i remember correctly try looking in the other fuse panel the one located to the left of the radio console if you cant find it, open the ignition and follow the sound of the chime. it shares the fuse block. chek that fuse out. good luck.

I don't think so. I think I've had mine above 85 before.
