How could I repair this?

My ashtray cover decided to pop off when one of my friends wouldn't stop playing with it. The old glue is still there but I was wondering if there is one way that is better than others to get the old glue off and what kind of new glue should I use to reattach it.

Use some mineral spirits/razor blade to get the old glue off then go out and buy some gorilla glue. Will hold forever....
