Well its about the time where i'm going to start the ground up rebuilding of my 91 Z28. One of the things i am going to be doing is swapping the stock dash out in favor of a 4th gen one. The donor car is is 95 z28. I'll get some more pics once i get the dash out of the other car. Here's the progress so far..

What was the motivation to switch to a 4th gen dash?

 

sweet im doing the same with my car right now. im going to a carb so i don't need all the wires which is a pain separating the ones i need and don't need. im gonna try and put in 4th gen door panels too. but the dash and counsel and a-pillar for sure. you putting in a full 4th gen interior?

 

i am swapping to carb and i needed to pull the dash out to get out the wires and the ducting. My A2W intercooler is going under the dash. Plus i have a 95 Z28 roller that i am grapping parts off of and i figured why not.

I too am going carb, a friend of mine is gonna help me sort out the wiring. Luckily for me my car wont have radio/speakers, power anything Just what makes the car run plus wipers and lights (mostly race). I might try and fit the 4th gen door panels on there too, havent decided yet. The console is deffinately goin in. Its a 6 speed console so mounting my pro ratchet shifter will be quite easy. I plan on fiberglassing the bottom half of the 4th gen pillars to the top half of the 3rd gen ones so it will look stock.


** once i get a few more parts in that are on order, i'll make a build thread of the whole car. Ranging from the interior, motor, trans, rear, suspension, and turbo setup.

 

Does the 4th gen dash provide more clearance for your intercooler?
Or is it because you simply just like the look better?

I guess I was wondering if it was choice based on form or function?

 

yeah same here i have manual everything and its a nice weather only car so no need for wipers, but ill prob keep them anyways. all the wiring i need is for head lights and turn signals and such. im getting the dash and counsel out of a 98 ss cause ive heard that the counsel on 93-97 has a gap between the dash and counsel on a thirdgen swap.

 

It is the cool factor....I did mime and Love it.... Still need to finish it though

 

form for sure, though it seems there might be a little extra room since all the A/C and heat stuff is out. Plus i get an nifty glove box too!

 

Well i'm about due for an update. Got the dash and console out of the 95, pulled all the wiring, airbags, and a/c duct work out and got it hard mounted into the 91. It was a lot easier than i though, all i had to do was cut 2 mounting brackets off the 91 and drill 2 new holes for the upper mounts. The a-piller (little glass work by the headliner needed) and kick panels bolt right in In the pics you can also see where about the A2W IC will go.

looking good I like to see the 4th gen camaro dash swap most people opt for the TA dash, I like the camaro one better just looks cleaner

its not that small, it's about 20" tall ans 12" wide, 5" thick.

not really. I bought a 95 roller in mint condition for $400, i tool the dash console, seat brackets, and brakes off it. parted the rest of the car out for $600, so in all reality i made $200 and got all the parts i needed

its supposed to look like that bolted up.
there is another piece of trim that covers the top.

 

Man that looks sweet! For all the wiring did you do it yourself or did you hire someone to do it for you?

 

i do everything myself, I am pulling all the wiring and running a painless harness.

 

im going to do the swap this summer, anything to avoid or pay close attention to?

 

hitting the windshield with the dremel when cutting off the brackets Good thing mine is cracked and had plans to replace it anyways.

 

Gives me gas when I see you guys doing the dash swap. I think about doing it and then the panic attack sets in. It would make things better for the drive train swap.

 

oh man. i thought the SAME thing when i did mine.
i JUST had a new windshield put in before hand.
the metal is very flimsy. i put a pair of vise grips on them and worked them back and forth until they broke off.
took a hammer and "rolled" the cut edge underneath so i wouldnt cut myself in the future.
i didnt want any splatter, so a cutting tool wasnt an option.
i have an air body saw, but those will get away if you arent careful.

 

A guy at work is going to race a '94 Camaro, and is parting out what he doesn't need and is going to sell me the majority of the interior for $75 (seats, dash, door panels and center console, maybe some other stuff if I decide I want it). He is going to pull them all soon, and he wanted me to find out how to pull the dash and door panels so nothing is damaged before he pulls them... anything any of you can pass on to me?

 

I just pulled the interior out of a 93 TA to put in my 89 camaro, and It was a good 5 hour job to take every single piece out. I mean from the dash to the trunk plastic, and the carpet to the headliner. If you are careful, and pay attention to what you are doing, and don't force anything, if all the bolts and clips are out the pieces will come right off, the anybody with sense can take the old interior out of a fourth gen, its not as bad as you would think. When it comes to putting it all back in, you got to know what you are doing. There is welding, fiberglassing, cutting, and lots of other stuff to do to make a good clean transition. Just tell the guy to take his time and don't force anything loose, and it will be fine. It would also be a good idea to ziploc bag all the fasteners and label them individualy since it is going to go through a couple of differant hands. Hope this helps.

 

hey guys im going to be putting a 4th gen dash in my 88. im putting it in because i obviously want it to look better. since its an 88, it has the cable driven speedo and the 4th gens have all electric crap. what exactly am i gonna have to do? its got a carb'd 350, it came with a TBI 305. id really like to get all the info i need before i do this.. dont wanna mess anything up ya know?

like i said i want it to look as nice as possible.. what dash would you suggest? the 93-97 T/A, the 98-02 T/A, the 93-97 Camaro, or the 98-02 Camaro? id like the easiest "plug and play" that i can get, so which looks the nicest and is going to be the easiest to hook up?

anybody have any wiring diagrams for this?

 

if you have a camaro, go with the camaro dash.
the lt1 dash is just as bad as the 3rd gen imo.
the speedo is fairly simple.
depending on the size hole in the tailshaft of the tranny, and what tranny you run there are several options on getting the speedo working.
what tranny do you run? long tail or short tail?
and how big is your hole for the speedo gear in your tranny? 3/4, or 1 1/2?
be either real small, or large basically.

Stage20, i appreciate helping me out. alright i run the 700r4, if im not mistaken they are mostly the same length? and its the small hole for the speedo cable into the tranny. but i might have to get a different tranny and it might have a large hole, so if ou could describe for both situations id be happy haha. i do like the camaro dash, but i like the 1995 t/a vents over the camaro vents. i have a few dashboards in mind though. talking to a guy about a 1995 camaro, and a 1995 t/a. it depends on whos is cheaper. okay so how am i going to te get my speedo running then?? i know people do this all the damn time and believe me ive been looking through the search to find out how to go from cable to electric and have found no answer. im not going to be running a/c or heat so that stuff doesnt matter. i plan on running seperate gauges for water temp, oil pressure, and volts so those dont really need to work or be accurate. only thing that needs to be accurate is my speedo, tach and fuel gauge. im just stuck on the whole speedo thing. do i have to buy something? or is it somehting i can rig on my own? id prefer a DIY thing.. money is tight. thanks stage 20. maybe you could pm me the answers? i dont wanna take up wheelzup84z's thread anymore than i already have.

 

the small hole tailshaft wont work that i know of with an electric sensor.
all 700's are the same length. i didnt know if you were running a th350 or not.
get a large hole tailshaft for the 700 from late 80's early 90's caprice i think.
for the th350, youll need a tailshaft from a buick pontiac olds tranny that has the large hole.
run a electric speed sensor from a mid 80's v8 firebird and it will send 4000ppm signal directly to the back of the speedo. pretty sure it has to be a v8 cluster, or the tach isnt going to work properly.
id ditch the idea on extra gauges and just hook up all the factory ones.
all youll need is a sendor from autometer for the temp, and your factory oil sender may even work.
if not, an lt1 oil pressure sensor works any of the 93-97 camaro/firebird clusters.

need more info just pulled my 93 firebird dash outta the 86 IROC today starting the carb swap. Need to know what wires and such you pulled.

 

I honestly love the 4th gen dash mod, but I think the stock IROC dash looks better than the 4th gen camaro dash. The 4th gen firebird dash just looks sick, and is the only one I would even consider a replacement for the third gen dash.

 

i prefer the 97-02 camaro dash personally. i dont like the three round center vents in the firebird dash

 

I am in the process of swapping in the same dash setup, has anyone been able to use the A/C system and it's ductwork?

 

Sorry for the (most likely repeat question on here), but I just got a 01 gauge cluster, pulse gen, and signal interface and want to throw it into my 87 Iroc. Does anyone know (possibly have pics or schematics) of the pins on the back of the 01 cluster? I need to figure out what pins go to what. Thanx.
