82-92 steeringwheel swap help

hello memebers.
i have an 87 base camaro with that very boxy rectangular looking steeringwheel.

a friend of mine has a 91 rs and he has the as i like to call it the "smoother"
version steeringwheel.

would a simple steeringwheel swap be all it takes to do this project
or would i need the entire steeringcolumn?

any info would be great.
thanks in advance

It should be pretty straight forward, but the airbag isn't going to work or anything. Airbag is removed by screws on the back side of the wheel.

Also if you go to get it inspected and they see an airbag wheel they might expect it to be original and for it to work idk.

thanks for the help.
i dont think they will bust my chops about it at the inspection station.
the only reason why they would even bring it up is if i had an airbag light flashing on the dash. but there is none so i dont think it will be THAT big of a deal. plus im here in nj and the inspection place i go to. they dont check anything out of the ordinary just the basics that are required.
thanks again!!!

I was thinking that the only thing that might be a pain is wiring up the horn contacts. Make sure you know which wires are for the horn switch and which ones are for the airbag. I speak from experience when I was like 17 and hit the wrong wire with the hot one and deployed the airbag into my face at point blank range. Scared me pretty good and I got laughed at but I was ok.

got that part coverd
after i found out its an even swap.
i pulled out my wiring diagram and started going over them haha
ive seen SIDE curtain air bags deploy and boy oh boy. they are like gunshot loud. and they seem to leave a pretty mark. if you are sticking your head inside the car from the outside as the air bag deploys haha.
a friend of mine unfortunately had that happen to him .
was out of work for 2 weeks. F*!!ed him up pretty bad
thanks for the heads up though.
always appreciate it
thats why i like this place

Re: 82-92 steeringwheel swap help

my friends at a local ford dealership said that when the windstars had some type of problem with the air bags.
that they would replace them and then set them face down outside and blow them up lol
dunno if they are truthfull or not. but they said that they had to go up on the roof and bring the exploded air bag back down lol

You can never have too many extra airbags laying around:
