gauges inlay compatibility ...late 80's to mid

I was just wondering if the gauge inlays from the late 80's can be swapped into the gauges from the mid 80's. They were a nicer style with more hash marks etc. As long as they are from a car with the same cylinder engine and the speedo read the same, is it possible? From what i gather, the temp and fuel gauges moved around in the later 80's, can you just move the gauge itself to compensate for that?

I think these ones that were given to me are from a 90 V6 and i have and 85 V6.

thanks.

Clusters from 82-89 have round guages, 90-92 are significantly different. The two are not interchangeable.

What exactly do you mean by not round? The part of the inlay that will show in the bezel appears to be round......

so an 88 or 89 would work then, correct? What about the speedometer though, i here firebird changed to electric earlier (86), would the inlay still work and be accurate? I read a post last night where you stated all mechanical speedo's are swapable and will be accurate.....obvious putting in an electric would mean changing components on the car, but what about just the inlay from an electric?

You might consider adding the make, model and year of your car in your sig (I wrongfully assumed you owned a Camaro). I'm unfamiliar with Pontiacs, but I've read about too many disasters (breaking needles and/or trouble calibrating the speedo head, for example) to recommend the attempt. If you give it a try, let us know the results. Good luck.

oops, sorry....85 firebird. It was there in the old board format, i never realized it disappeared.

If it is true that they went electronic earlier then a cluster swap won't work. That is why i am curious about the just the inlays....which a friend took off at the junkyard thinking they would work for him (but his is a V8 and he got them from a V6), so he gave them to me. They are from a 90, 91 or 92 V6 Firebird.
