91 gauge cluster v6 to v8 tach.

I bought a gauge cluster off ebay that was supposed to be out of a v8 car. When i recieved it and put it in everything worked except the tach was at 2200 rpm at idle and moves quickly after looking on this board i found out it is a v6 gauge cluster since oil press gauge is 40-80. Is there anyway to make the tach work correctly in a v8? Is there a resistor to change or a pulse recalibration unit I can change? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just bought the 91 convertible 305 tbi.

If you have the tach that was in the car put it in the new cluster all of the electronics should be contained within the tach module and work just fine. If there is a cosmetic difference then you be able to find one that is compatable. I have not done a tach swap on a camaro but did on my Monte Carlo of the same vintage and it was no problem.

Off the shelf tachs used to have a switch for selecting 4,6 or 8 cylinders but I have not looked at one lately and I did not see a slect on the Monte tach.

Re: 91 gauge cluster v6 to v8 tach.

I have the original tach but that is why I bought another cluster is because when cranking car tach would goto 7 grand then when the car was running it would stay steady at 2500 rpm and not move till the car was shut off then it would goto 0. this tach moves it is just way off and the owner swears it was out of a 350 tpi car and worked fine , but from the info on this board it is a v6 cluster.

If the redline on your tach is 6000 then it is from a 6 cyl car.If it has a 5000 redline then it is from a 8 cyl car 305 TPI,TBI.If it has a 5500 redline then it is from a 8 cyl car 350 TPI or possibly a 305 w manual trans

The tach drive chip is separate from the gauge itself. You can swap it with your old one, but then the new one will do exactly the same thing as the old. The problem is in the drive unit. There's a fix for your old one.
