Hi, I just bought a '92 Camaro RS with a built LT1/LT4 with a T56 transmission, full suspension, tune, manual windows, 3.73s, short shifter with stop ring, T-tops, SFCs etc... The car is an unfinished project that I was lucky enough to get my hands on for cheap.

I was wondering if anyone had ever done a custom gauge cluster, with a different speedo and tach right in the cluster. Something like a blank gauge pad that I could cut holes into and just put whatever I want there? I think it'd be cool to put in a 200MPH speedo and a 10k tach right in the dash and lose the stock gauges. Any ideas?

 

Sounds like a great plan and a great project car.
I recently put in a t56 my self and I was thinking of the same thing of see if anyone else has tried putting in a different gauge cluster.
Sadly I never done it before, I would really like to see if its possible.
I wish I had some ideas for you.

 

Thanks! I have high hopes for it... It's a '92 with the heritage package so it's got the Alloy wheels painted with the red, and it's got the black stripes going back. The LT1 has LT4 heads and a decent cam, .556/.576" max lift at .236/.242 if my memory serves me right. Gotta look at the cam card.

I may just wire the stock speedo to the T56.. .what'd you use to get the speedo to work? You have a 91 so I believe you've got the same electronic speedometer

 

I was going to suggest something like I used but I don't think they make them for anything newer than an 89 model.

 

That'd be perfect right there, but what's the major difference between the 1992 dash and the pre-89 dashes? Different dimensions?

 

I didn't know there was a difference to be honest.But I am new to 3rd gen Camaro's.The dash in my car is out of a newer model just not sure how newer.It didn't have a column in it so I'm not sure if it was an airbag setup or not.Might research it on here or post a question to find out.I'm curious myself now.

I thought you could use the same wires for off the transmission off my 5 speed, anything newer then a 89 had electric speedo sensor. but we have to buy a digital Dakota to make the t56 work with the speedometer. its like a little weird box thing and you have to adjust it till it gets the right singal off the transmission. (the 5 speed's has a different gears and works differently I guess.)
I think if I remeber the thing was about $90. but I found it raither confusing to make it work. and I thought it would be better to make a custom gauge cluster, but I would find it a little difficult and a challenge to make it fit, but if the dimensions are the same, Im sure its possible to make it fit.
it would be a neat thing to have on a 92 car.
but it would also be a pretty expendsive project to do.

 

You could swap to an earlier dash and use those gauges. I did the opposite and went to the '90-'92 dash, but still need to locate the gauges.

 

when you mean 'dash' you mean the whole camaro dash??
I did heard its possible to do that, but I heard it does need to take some adjustments to make it fit right.

 

Check out my vbgarage i made a gauge cluster to work for my 91. Every gauge you need and you still use the stock trim and everything.Minus the clear plastic thats covering the gauges.Only issue was that I used mech. speedo so i needed to trim out one of the ducts some but no big deal.

Yes, my '89 was cracked and so i decided to install the entire dash assembly from a '90 or '91 Camaro. The dash pad is from an '89. The '90 dash doesn't slide right in, the stud on the brackets are facing vertical. The '89 studs on the mounting brackets are horizontal. Also, the driver's side duct to the air vent hits on the bracket, so it has to be grinded down. I'm still working on this part.

Here is one that I made out of carbonfiber. this is a 92 dash so you will have to do a lot of work to get this together. I have a template for this one but you will have to be a good fabricator to make this work out. Let me know i can help out a little.

 

Here is one more photo! These are autometer phantom guages, note the clear plastic sheild that covers the 91 and 92 guage cluster is gone from this. I have around ten hours in the mounting and building this. But i am a fabricator and have a fab shop and air tools. So if you feel like tackling this let me know. I have a template that i made out of abs plastic for my rough draft.

 

Are the (2) big guages 5" or 3-3/8? That cluster looks awsome!

 

I don't know what options there are for gearing but, could you redo your speedo gear the same way you do when you change the rear end, and then cover the face plates? For example, my car had the rear end replaced with steeper gears, but did not have the gear at the trans changed so mine reads 15% faster than it should. I have a 110 speedo. If I made it read half of actual vehicle speed (or whatever is actually possible) I could cover the faceplate with one that has 2x as many markings and have a 220 speedo.

 

33/8 smaller guages! 5" is too crowded.

 

I have been programming a completely digital setup, led bars for the tach and 7 segment display for speed, lcd for everything else.
Im plagued with mechanical issues right now though

 

I purchased my IROC back in 88 and almost immediately swapped out the old guages for a Cyberdyne Digital Dash. I just pulled the Cyberdyne guages out and put in Dakota Digital. It is alot cleaner display.

 

I've got the Dakota Digital also, had them built from my stock cluster as the 90-92 is not in their inventory. My only problem is that the gauge labels don't light up, but once you know where they are, it's no big deal. Here's a pic I took while on the rollers at a dyno.

 

I didn't notice that about the guage labels. I wish mine would light up also. I need to get ahold of them to get a new plastic face plate for mine. When I purchased mine used they were a scratched up a little bit. But the price that I paid for them was worth it.
